Dining Hall / Re: [2005-09] Vouloir c’est pouvoir [open]
« Last post by Amandine Patenaude on Today at 12:04:58 PM »
Everything was back to normal. Or it was for some people, anyway. Amandine glared at the new headmaster and wondered why he was trying so hard to make a good first impression. Did he have a bunch of random kids here, too? After the revelations of last year, nothing would surprise her anymore.

On the upside, they were back at Beauxbatons and if he was just trying to make a good impression, at least the Flaubert guy had arranged for the castle to have a thorough spring clean. Amandine approved of that much, at least. And the sports initiative sounded interesting. Maybe she would even try out for the Quidditch team this year, she thought. After all, she'd survived a summer in Antarctica, so a bit of time on her broom shouldn't be much of a hardship.

So far she hadn't spoken much with anyone. Secretly Amandine was a little disappointed that they were sitting at their house tables. She would have liked to have sat with Mathilde, but she had her own friends and it was foolish to think that just because they'd discovered they were half-sisters they would suddenly be friends at school as well. Lettie was seated within earshot, and that was nice, but there would be time for them to chat more privately in the common room later. Amandine wanted to hear all about her friend's summer, though she'd already read all about the Artistic flying championships and practically memorised the latest rankings.

Oh, well, at least the food looked good. Amandine decided to stick to just soup and bread for her main course, but had already saved one of the nicest-looking pastries on a plate for later, in case everyone else ate faster than her...

Heart racing, Edyta's instinct was to push herself away from whoever she'd just crashed into and drop into a defensive stance, but working on a dragon reservation tended to sharpen one's reflexes and observational skills both. In a fraction of a second she took in the fact that it was another girl she had encountered, about the same age as herself and slender; dressed in an exceptionally pretty outfit and disappointingly wearing a mask so Edyta couldn't see her face. Edyta felt herself blushing slightly and was glad of the poor lighting that would hide her reaction to the not-at-all-unpleasant sensation of gentle hands on her shoulders.

"I am..." she began and then paused, her small stock of English phrases entirely unsuitable for these circumstances. "Excuse me. I do not speak English" she said as the girl dropped her hands to her sides. That gave Edyta the moment she needed to raise her wand and cast the translation charm she had hoped she wouldn't need, just in time to hear the comment on her outfit.

"I cast a translation charm" she said experimentally in Polish, watching her companion's face closely. When she saw understanding rather than confusion, she continued in her own language "Thank you. I am a trainee dragonologist in Romania and I came here straight from work. Your gown is...magnificent." She, too, managed a smile, her earlier shock all but dismissed as a clever but harmless hex. It was a shame none of her colleagues had been able to attend, because she was realising for the first time that visiting a haunted house alone wasn't the best idea, but at least she wasn't alone any more. Then a little belatedly, she added "Oh, excuse me. Edyta Ciesynska", and wondered if she was supposed to shake hands. Didn't British people like to shake hands when they met?

"Let's hope you're right" she said grinning, gripping her wand firmly as they approached the only way out "I have never been here before either." For the moment Edyta decided she was quite happy to let someone else lead for a while. Hopefully the ballroom would be just at the end of this corridor, which felt colder than expected and had an eerie, thick mist swirling around at knee-level a little further ahead. As they started to walk, an low moaning sound suddenly rose out of nowhere, seeming to have no point of origin and... was that something moving in the mist?

London / Re: inconsistent stories. [harlan]

In another life, Lottie supposed they could have been friends. It might have been fun. However, they'd fallen into this. Not quite a will-they-won't-they but more of a you-annoy-me-I'll-annoy-you-more scenario. Harlan's lack of reaction was maddening and hilarious at the same time. He was unflappable. A journalistic nightmare with tip-top media training. Charlotte couldn't decide if she was besotted with him or disgusted.

Still, she grinned. "Sure," she nodded. "You definitely just walk into the drama," Charlotte cooed as she drank, the fruity little bubbles tickling her nose. "You should come with a warning," she smiled again, her bright eyes glancing over at his friends before flicking them back to Harlan.

Good. Busy. Training, he'd said. Lottie let out a dramatic sigh. "Gosh, you're boring," she announced, though not unkindly. How anticlimactic. Not that she'd ever be expecting Harlan to sing like a canary. There had been nothing. Zilch. Nada. No photos, no sightings, sod all. That usually only meant one of two things - he actually was  busy or he was hiding something.

"Totally," she agreed swiftly. "Cross my heart and hope to die," Charlotte stated as she batted her eyelashes, still slurping her cocktail. "I can't hassle you if you're not doing anything," she reminded Harlan with another sunny smile. "I've been busy too," she admitted. "Got a new boyfriend." There was a pause. "You still chronically single, babe?"

He laughed a little at her saying he was missing out. “I like a cuppa as much as anyone, but it’s not the appropriate environment for it right now, I don’t think. Not for me, anyway. You do you, lass.” He chuckled playfully at her, eyes smiling. “Maybe I’ll go grab the bottle of Firewhiskey we brought and you can put it in your tea, if ya can’t take it straight.” He challenged, playful.

“I just meant some food you might not have had a ton of. I want some like… real authentic Moroccan food, you know? Not the off brand shite we have in Glasgow.” He considered for a moment, though. “I can wait one more day, though for good food. Wanna order in some takeaway? I’ve found a few pamphlets inside in the kitchen I think. We can go look in a minute, I would rather hear about how much you’d love me if I was a worm.” He teased. He loved her dimples, and she looked so gorgeous grinning at him cheekily. He wanted to go right up to her and smack her ass. So, he did.

He gave her a playful swat on the behind, “Atta girl.” He teased, giving it a groping rub where he had just smacked to soothe it a little (not that it had hurt much to begin with). “You know, I’m serious, though.” He said, after a moment. “You ever thought about like… future stuff with us? Where we’ll be in 5, 10, 20 years?” He asked. “I’m nearing 30, you know. I ought to start thinking more seriously about settling in, you know? Wife, kids–maybe even, gasp, a stable job.” Honestly, that last one scared him the most.

“You’re doing so well with your bakery and we’re doing well. It’s been about a year together now, right? Didn’t we get together in December?” Maybe this was a sneaky way to remember his anniversary, but he was pretty sure he remembered it correctly. Did she count from the day they started dating or the day they met as adults?

“I’m not proposing right now, Maddie, so don’t get too nervous or excited. I’m just… you know, thinking. Is that something you’d like with me? One day? Or soon. Or one day far from now? What’s in your head, lass?”

Wales / Re: [July MP] Peace with the Demons | Orphans, Aurors, and all
« Last post by Cameryn White on April 17, 2024, 08:36:53 AM »
--and unexpectedly, ropes shot out toward her (well, at least toward the pitch) from different places throughout the stands above.

With a quick invocation to Macha, Cameryn turned on her heel, hoping to just miss one of the few Incarcerous ropes that actually was aimed at her, but upon "reappearing" against the wall at the outside of the pitch, she found that her ankles were tied together. She found this by falling over, naturally. But the also-Disillusioned source of some other hexes didn't seem to have noticed that she had landed near him/her, as they were casting some rather loud battle magic and hadn't heard the reapparition crack or seen the invisible cylinder wrapped in loose rope.

"Confringo," she cast astonishingly loud, and even as the explosive force left her wand and before the Disillusioned target even registered they were about to be blown into the wall, she thought Shit, I'm still Amplified. She'd have to cut the rope and also SIlence herself; she made the split-second decision to mutter "Diffindo" under the cover of her previous spell's explosion and cut the rope first, so that she could stand up quickly. Halfway up she managed to murmur "Quietus" with her wand at her throat. Then she turned on her heel once more and returned to the exact spot she'd been at previously, near the center of the pitch.

Once she'd Reapparated the second time, Cameryn felt a little dizzy from so much rapid Apparition and had to take a full two seconds to get her bearings and see what the status of the battle was. It wasn't super for her Orphans, but it was tolerable. Some of her children had been captured, she could see -- visible ropes around invisible bodies like she'd experienced, except they also appeared to be Apparating away without standing up. Meaning Potter's minions were taking them away from the battlefield themselves, for actual incarceration most likely. But there were also scorch marks and explosion residue around the pitch and in two places in the stands. And her green flames were still burning bright, moving outward from the pitch center in tree-branch fractal spirals; one branch far away from her looked like it was trying to be extinguished, so clearly not someone who worked under Potter directly. He'd figured out ages ago that the Widow's Flames Curse resisted traditional extinguishing spells, and just to let it burn up.

Another rope flew past her ass and she turned to see where it was coming from, but her ears could detect consistent, repeated POP!s of multiple Apparitions, so they weren't staying in the same spots. A smart move on both sides' parts, but it certainly made true combat difficult for every single person under the Orphans or the Aurors.

Well if he's taking prisoners, so am I, Cameryn decided. "Agronā le glaodhan blàir, stain an talamh le fuil! Revelio Inimicos!" The spell she'd used in the Battle of Griff's Cliffs did what it had before, a blue watery-looking mist washing across the field, filling up the space of any humanoids in its path and "washing away" their Disillusionment. Some were her Orphans, and some were Potter's Aurors. She stepped into the mist herself to remove her own Disillusionment and cast two laser-targeted Stinging Hexes at two of the Ministry's lackeys, her eyes darting across the field to watch other opponents being revealed, while two of our Orphans took up positions behind her with Shield Charms.
