    Course Description

The art of summoning spirits has been utilised for good and for ill since well before the common era, though the practise that we now call chikara-jutsu developed as part of the Onmyōdō cosmology in the late 7th century. The summoning aspect of Onmyōdō was a sign of prestige and knowledge; eventually, although “onmyōji” continued to utilise Summoning when necessary, “shōkanji” became the title of a summoning specialist. The aim of this course is to familiarise students with an overview of Summoning without dwelling on other aspects of Onmyōdō which are covered in the Mahoutokoro course of the same name. Students will study the different types of kami and learn the proper procedures for summoning kami and making the Pact with them to conjure shikigami.

Summoning is available to all students third-year to seventh-year as an elective course of study. In order to truly comprehend the subject matter, however, a solid understanding of Onmyōdō is practically a necessity, and at least some background in Makimono is also recommended. Students who are contemplating the art of Summoning should consider their performance in these courses during their first few years at Mahoutokoro.

Summoning will be actively taught in conjunction with Onmyōdō and Makimono; students will not be asked to accomplish anything beyond what they have studied in these courses, but no portion of the class time will be taken away from the rest of the student body in order to familiarise just a few students with a concept they should already have been taught in another course.

    Learning Goals

As in all walks of life, not only the “how” but also the “why” is important to consider. The purpose of Summoning is to bring the shōkanji (and/or onmyōji) closer to nature and to provide an avenue with which to have difficult tasks performed by a spirit more suited to the task. It is NOT to promote laziness by capturing spirits and having them do everything for you, and in fact this is impossible to do since proper Summoning involves invoking a mutually beneficial Pact. A shōkanji who presumes to order kami around is much more likely to perish beneath the ire of the spirit they are attempting to subjugate.

In absorbing this important principle, the well-meaning shōkanji will learn his or her own strengths and weaknesses and what they are capable of on their own, promoting the development of not only their magical skill but also their very character.

    Readings, Materials, and Resources

To every class session, students should bring their wand, a quill, and their course readings.

Theory lectures will also require a supply of ordinary parchment for note-taking and writing assignments.

Practical sessions will also require two blank handscrolls.

The course readings are Kin’ugyokuto-shū, “The Book of the Golden Crow and Jade Rabbit;” and Senji Ryakketsu, “The Summary to Judgements of Divinations.” Other readings may be assigned, but the texts will be provided by the instructor or the students will be instructed to procure a copy well in advance of the class meeting.

    Assignments, Evaluations, and Grading

Attendance: Attendance of both lecture and session periods constitutes 25% of your grade when the instructor reviews your performance for the year. All information given during meetings of the class is relevant to the subject matter, as well as important to your understanding and safety. As such it is imperative that you are in the classroom for all possible meetings to ensure your success as a shōkanji and to lower your chances of dying painfully. Occasional tardiness is understood as sometimes unavoidable and will incur no penalties, but a pattern of repeated tardiness or absence will reflect poorly upon you.

Participation: Active participation in both lecture and session periods constitutes 25% of your grade when the instructor reviews your performance for the year. The dialogue is an educational tool that allows for students to ask for clarification from their instructor, as well as for the instructor to see and hear for himself that his students are comprehending the subject matter. Relevant questions are strongly encouraged during both theoretical and practical class sessions, and working with other students will not be frowned on provided that you are contributing to each other’s educational development and not causing an interruption.

<*>Your instructor would also like to point out that if you lose attendance points, you are also losing participation points. Thus, once again, it is imperative that you are in the classroom for all possible meetings to ensure your success as a shōkanji and to lower your chances of dying painfully.

Theory Assignments: Completion of theoretical assignments constitutes 25% of your grade when the instructor reviews your performance for the year. Examples of theory assignments are assigned readings from the textbooks to be reviewed in a later lecture, essays on subject matter, and observation journals of kami and shikigami.

Practical Assignments: Completion of practical assignments constitutes 25% of your grade when the instructor reviews your performance for the year. Students will be given in-class practises during their sessions with the instructor; these exercises must be completed by the end of the session unless otherwise indicated by the instructor. Examples of in-class practises are writing summoning scrolls, moving the energies of elemental magics, and complete summonings themselves.

<*>Because summoning can be very dangerous when attempted by a novice and especially without supervision, early students will not be given out-of-class practical assignments and in fact are discouraged from doing so. The instructor will usually begin assigning out-of-class practises in the fourth semester of the course in a limited scope. By the beginning of the seventh semester of the course, students will be expected to not only conduct out-of-class practises of their own but also demonstrate complete and proper safety procedures, and document these procedures for the instructor’s review.

NEWT Examinations: All departing seventh year students still enrolled in Summoning, regardless of their rank, are required to take both written and practical NEWT examinations in the subject.

A Note on the First Rank Test

Students who wish to participate in the First Rank Test each April must meet the following criteria across their entire educational experience at Mahoutokoro:

<*>Have a working knowledge at or above the expected level of your class year in all subjects
<*>Demonstrate analytical problem solving in coursework
<*>Perform and endure physical tasks that challenge your physique and mindpower
<*>Demonstrate proficiency in a variety of advanced offensive spells, focus, and technique
<*>Demonstrate proficiency in a variety of defensive spells, concentration, and multitasking

In addition, a professor must endorse the student for testing in order for the application to move forward.

If you wish to earn an endorsement from your Summoning instructor, you must exhibit great familiarity with basic summoning procedure and safety, be able to identify kami by their element, and demonstrate sufficient mastery to independently summon an eighth- or seventh-rank shikigami. For this reason, except in exceedingly rare circumstances, your instructor will not provide an endorsement to any fourth-year or younger student; a typical student must have completed five semesters and be in your sixth semester of Summoning to request an endorsement.
