Clem liked Herbology better than its related subjects, especially Potions. There was more room to be right and more room for error. She liked working with her hands, too, and pulling the leaves off things, smelling the plants (pleasantly fragrant or not-so-pleasantly foul and odorous) as she ground them with mortar and pestle – it all felt a bit more grounding than concocting gloppy sludgy things which would alter the natural state of just being.

Besides that, this lesson was a little more unorthodox than usual and Clementine had always liked Professor Ajay. She wondered for a moment what her professor might have been like while she’d been attending school, and if they might have been friends. She continued to speculate that maybe her Professor seemed like kind of a hippie, and that usually those types were binned in Hufflepuff – not that she had anything against Hufflepuffs – so there must’ve been a reason she had been in Gryffindor that she didn’t obviously reveal to her students on a regular basis. Perhaps this miniature camping trip would shift her views on the subject of hippie and Hufflepuff coinciding.

The students had gotten their lists of things to retrieve, and if she were being totally honest, Clementine hadn’t even stayed checked in to listen to her professor’s objectives or to collaborate with other people. The idea in getting a list was to accumulate the ingredients listed, was it not? Building a tent didn’t even appeal to her. When she went camping with her siblings, even if it was right ontheir farmhouse’s property, they preferred (at least, she and Elisha preferred) to lie on their blankets and look at the stars. Clothes that smelled like campfire smoke in the morning were always a plus, too, morphing into something more like nostalgia and summer than firewood, and she couldn’t smoke cigarettes in the tent. The outdoors were far preferable to her and they always had been, so even though Clementine’s first choice wasn’t Herbology, she could indulge. And maybe alone.

Picking at her fingernails and tripping over a few rogue sticks and stumps on her way further into the forest, she mumbled indiscriminately to herself – a healthy combination of swear words and out-loud thinking. Apart from her grades, which were already sagging further below her preferred standard, she didn’t care, really, about collecting the items. She supposed after wandering around awhile longer, she’d pick on some… unsuspecting group of people to ask them where they’d gotten their things. In exchange for whiskey, normally, but she wasn’t carrying a whole lot of that these days. Her hand slipped into the pocket of her coat and felt around for the cold metal flask she knew she wouldn’t find and the resulting lurch in her chest was a weird mixture of relief and longing. How long would it stay like this?

Holding her breath, Clementine reached the edge of a much flatter, prettier meadow. The sense of peace that cascaded down through her limbs was cut short upon seeing a familiar… back. They hadn’t spoken properly in months. He looked taller. They were the only two people out here, and there was no way in hell she’d be able to avoid him, sooo… “You find anything yet?” She queried, sounding breathless even though she’d exerted next to no energy bumbling through the trees. “No luck so far, but can’t say I’ve actually looked that hard.”

Shortly after he took the lollipop from his mouth, the salty sour taste slowly slipped from his tongue and as a result his emotions gradually stabilized. His feeling of sorrow faded and he couldn't remember what was the cause nor just what he thought was so funny a few minutes ago. He looked around at the other students for a clue to what he seemed to be forgetting.

"What just happened?" he asked. He looked around and found disapproving and concerned faces most of which slowly turned away from him. Carey often craved to be the center of attention, and the life of the party. It was the warm smiles, joy filled laughter and friendly cheers that fed him. Yet, this reaction from his fellow students, fell into the category of his worst nightmare.

There was the plant... I ate it, then... Carey's muddled thoughts tried to connect the dots as a hufflepuff approached and offered to carry Carey's backpack. Grateful for the friendly jester Carey handed his backpack over and silently continued to tried to piece together what happened. The plant must had made me say or do something awful, he concluded as he walked next to @Jari Trickett . Jari was quite an unusual Trickett, having reputation for an infatuation with aliens and UFOs. Finding him quite entertaining, Carey had always like the unusual hufflepuff and now felt more endured towards him than ever for not leaving him gormless, alone in the forest.

Although Carey's faculties were now all present when he took the assignment form the Professor, he had no clue what the plants on the list looked like, let alone where in this bloody forest would he find them. He loathed the thought of looking each plant up in his herbology book; One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi and searched around him for a solution. He noticed @Aase Trickett-Cassoway and @Aldous Cresswell near him.

"Oi, Aase and Aldous you two want to join Jari an me as we knock these out? You don't mind Jari, right? If we all grab one we will be done in no time." Not waiting for a response he quickly assigned a plant to each of them. "Let see...  Aase you can get Balm, Jari maybe Mallow... I'm sure I can get dittany" thinking is was a leaf and likely be most easiest to look up and spot. "That leaves...asphodel. You don't mind getting some Aldous, do ya?"

He dropped his voice down to a whisper. "I brought some pastries." Pointing to one of the backpack that Jari was carrying. "I'll divide them up amug us, and we can pass them out later."

He was now sure he will be back in the good graces of the Professor and his fellow students in no time.

ooc: feel free to refuse him.:)

Abby was a big ball of nerves as she made her way quickly to the main Herbology greenhouse. A special class had been planned for that day, one in which involved her and her classmates spending the night in the Forbidden Forest, which the young Hufflepuff was, to put it mildly, not overly thrilled about. She’d come to adore and greatly appreciate Professor Ajay over the past nearly-two years, with everything she’d done to help the young Hufflepuff recover from all of the trauma she’d experienced as a result of the terrible fire and magical dome that had occurred at the start of the previous school year, but she was more than a little concerned at the thought of a couple dozen mostly-underage students entering a forest that they’d been told for years they were never to enter, due to it being the home of several (some rumoured) dangerous creatures, even if they were being accompanied by their professor. The forest did have forbidden in its name, after all.

None-the-less, Abby was still quite intrigued - even nervously excited - for the unconventional lesson, as she’d grown to love Herbology a lot more over the past year or two (mostly due to the positive influence of Professor Ajay) and the blonde-haired witch was now always eager to learn more about any type of plant, both muggle and magical, and how to properly care for them. She’d truly grown to take great comfort from looking after all sorts of vegetation, particularly over the past few months, almost to the point of preferring their company over that of their creature counterparts. Because of this, the small girl could often, presently, be found in the ancient greenhouse that had been discovered over the summer, and it was partially the beauty and tranquility of this unique greenhouse that had sparked Abby’s love for all things flora that school year. She was now as likely to head to the greenhouses to care for a budding plant, as she was to hole up in the Hufflepuff Common Room to read a book or venture down to the Black Lake to write in her journal under the shade of her favourite tree. Her priorities had shifted since the end of her second year and she’d begun to discover what truly mattered to her and made her happy. Plants, rather unexpectedly, were now one of those things.

As she entered the greenhouse, Abby felt herself relax slightly and even managed a genuine smile as she was greeted by Professor Ajay and handed a small, leather rucksack. Instantly curious as to what it contained, the young Hufflepuff swiftly made her way over to the sitting area of the greenhouse, grabbed a cup of the professor’s homemade tea, and sat down on the ground in front of the group of bean bag chairs - as was normal for the 13-year-old - preferring the hardness of the dirt to the squishiness of the chairs. She patiently waited for more of her classmates to arrive, keeping an eye out for Jari and Aase in particular, anxious in both a good and bad way for the class to begin.

When everyone had finally arrived, been given their rucksacks, and (unlike Abby) claimed one of the bean bag chairs, Professor Ajay started the lesson, explaining what was in each of their bags and what the purpose of the class really was. The blonde-haired witch tried her best to stay focused on the passionate older woman and what she was saying, but she found it extremely difficult once Loomley made an appearance. Abby had been fascinated with the small leaf creature ever since she’d first set eyes on him and still found herself easily distracted whenever he was nearby. She’d only interacted with him a couple of times and was always eager to do so again, especially if it meant getting to hold him or the like.

After Professor Ajay had finished speaking and they’d headed out of the greenhouse and towards the Forbidden Forest, the small girl found herself enviously looking back at Aase, with Jari at a further distance in front of her, as her dormmate held on tightly to Loomley, he having chosen her to be his caretaker for the journey to the forest. Abby knew the female Trickett quite well at that point, having practically lived with her for almost three full years, so even though she was mostly paying close attention to Aase due to the adorable creature she had clutched between her hands, the observant witch quickly noticed how unwell her friend looked. Was she just feeling sick, or was it more complicated than that? She hoped Loomley brought her some sort of relief, whatever it was that was bothering her.

Turning back to focus on what was in front of her, the young Hufflepuff made an effort to quickly catch back up to the majority of the group, with Jari close by her once again. Abby planned to stick near the brown-haired boy as much as she possibly could for the rest of that day and night, like she’d preferred to do for the majority of the past two years. She secretly hoped that Professor Ajay didn’t split up the boys and girls when it was time for them to go to sleep and, even more secretly, wondered if something would scare her enough by the end of the class to cause her to instinctually grab on to his hand again. She still remembered how it had felt, back in October, and, rather shockingly, found herself wishing that she could experience the lovely sensation again, even if it did mean being frightened by something. Abby didn’t fully understand these new feelings she was having, but she was very curious to know if Jari shared any of them.

Distracted by her perplexing musings, the small girl didn’t even notice as the group entered the Forbidden Forest and Professor Ajay brought them to a halt, after a few more minutes of walking, to question them all on a particular plant that was growing at her feet. Before she could even get a good look at the small tree-like shrubs however, Carey Baisely, a second year Gryffindor Abby really only knew due to the fact that he was constantly getting himself into trouble, grabbed a handful of the plant’s leaves and stuffed them into his mouth. She had no idea why the younger boy had felt the need to do such thing, but when he began hysterically laughing a few seconds later, the sympathetic Hufflepuff was sure he regretted it.

Now even more on edge than she had been before, worrying about what other unsuspecting harmful things called the forest home, Abby suddenly became hyper-aware of every sound and movement around her, her body instinctually waiting for something to jump out at her. The 13-year-old, therefore, almost panicked when Professor Ajay soon after tasked them with finding a small list of plants. Even the prospect of receiving a reward and earning the professor’s approval didn’t really matter in that moment of utter terror to the blonde-haired witch.

Thankfully, before she entered full-on panic mode, Abby overheard Carey - who appeared to have fully recovered from his earlier ordeal - talking quietly to some of her friends, including Jari and Aase. Not wanting to be left all on her own to find the ingredients by herself, the small girl uncharacteristically interrupted the small group’s conversation. “I-I’ll help too! I could go with Jari. Or Aase. Who’d ever rather have my company, I suppose.” She glanced in Jari’s direction then, blushing slightly, knowing she’d, unashamedly, prefer to go with him.

Lionel opened his bag, rummaging for some extra parchment for separating the herb from the other supplies on the list, and carefully plucked a few stalks, enough to burn for an hour's worth of star divination. The rustling of the supplies masked the sound of feet approaching, so the fifth year was caught off guard by the sound of Clementine's voice. It sounded strange to him; sometimes the Gryffindors and Slytherins had mixed periods, so it wasn't as if he hadn't heard her speak in the last several months, but it hadn't been addressed directly to him. He straightened up swiftly, paper in one hand and mallowsweet in the other, and looked down at them, implicitly answering her question.

"Mallowsweet," he said, indicating the stalks by his feet as he lifted a knee on which to roll up the stalks within the parchment. Twisting the bottom in an efficient motion, he tucked it into his pack and pulled out the map before hoisting it back onto his back. Lionel looked at her curiously, unsure what her intention was. As far as he recalled, their last meeting, like the--three before it? Lionel had nearly lost track at this point--hadn't ended well. He didn't regret what he'd said. Her drinking habit was a destructive crutch, and not being discouraged by the rest of her company as far as he could see. Once, though, he had thought that it was lucky that he himself didn't prize emotional highs; an Elixir to Induce Euphoria would not have been that difficult. Clementine, though, didn't want to hear him tell her what to do. He'd been right again, he had thought then; if he couldn't say it as a one-time friend, what would he have been allowed to say as a partner?

Lionel needed to backtrack to the edge of the forest to collect balm, which preferred shady areas but not to the point of the darkness of the deep forest. The other two he wasn't sure about pinpointing; they were both Greek plants, and he doubted they enjoyed Scotland's clime. He sighed, too quietly for anyone but him to hear. "Balm next. You can come if you'd like," he offered, gesturing with the map in his left hand. Politesse was not his chosen forte but he saw no other viable option in this scenario than to offer. He not about to wait around for her to deliberate, though, and immediately turned in the direction he'd gestured to cut across the forest in a straight line towards the nearest edge. Whatever ease had once lived between them was drained.

Janae was excited by the very concept of this lesson. She loved being outside, but she had never gone camping. It wasn't something her parents had every considered up their ally, so she had never really gotten to experience it. She was eager for a chance to explore the forest, enjoy nature, and heaven forbid—even learn something along the way. Janae wasn't the best at herbology, admittedly, but she was good enough, and she loved the professor. Professor Ajay talked to them like equals. She didn't speak down to her students, and Janae loved that. She also really cared about nature. Janae always loved someone who was genuine.

Janae understood exactly what she meant by making things more than fine, too. She didn't want to just explore nature, she wanted to get lost in it! She wanted to see everything up close and personal. She was almost vibrating with excitement as class began. She followed the group out into the forest, taking a moment to really look at the flowers and plants. She took in a deep breath and exhales, smelling plants and it making her feel kind of spiritual. There was something about nature that affected a person deep down. She was sure everyone could feel it if they listened to their heart enough.

Things went south quickly, though. She noticed a few students eating the leaves of a plant, and assumed it was edible. With some prodding from friend, there might have been a dare involved, Janae took some too. It didn't take long before she was giggling uncontrollably. She heard Phillip cry out that it was Alihotsy, which meant nothing to Janae. Of course the teacher didn't seem too mad. She gave out lollipops, and Janae felt a bit like she had gotten the better end of the stick, as she got a lolli and the ones who didn't eat it, didn't. Plus she got a good laugh out of it, and she proved herself to her friend. She was no chicken. She did almost any dare someone made for her. She was terrible that way, the peer pressure a very effective way of getting Janae to do whatever people wanted her to. She could never back down from a dare of a challenge, and didn't want to seem lame, un-fun, boring, or cowardly.

She left that friend behind and went to follow Clementine as she watched the other girl from afar. Clem had really gotten so pretty lately, and Janae didn't know what had changed, or if anything had changed. She knew Clem had a boyfriend now, something that made her stomach a bit uncomfortable, but she tried to ignore it most of the time. They were just friends, and that was all they would ever be. She knew that, but it was hard to keep her heart from beating faster around the Quidditch Co-Captain.

They were sent to collect a few different types of plants, and Janae knew for sure she would need some help looking. She went to go ask Clem, but noticed the girl, from a distance, speaking to Lionel. She knew better than to interfere there. She would find another friend to work with. She settled on weaseling in with a group of Ravenclaws that seemed pretty smart. She followed them around and listened to their answers, though never actually joined the group. She was a bit biased against Ravenclaws, partially because she had a particular Ravenclaw she didn't like, and they all seemed to go together, didn't they?

Finally, they seemed to catch on to Janae following them, and then huddled together and spoke more quietly, so she decided to explore. She rambled on down the path, looking for some dittany—whatever that was—and just enjoying the scenery again. She didn't notice that the rumble of voices was getting lower and lower as she walked deeper into the forest, until suddenly there was silence. She turned around and realized she had no idea what direction she came from. She was lost.

She didn't want to go back to the castle, though. She needed to get back to the group. She called out. “Anyone? Hello?”

When Leona was handed a backpack, she had no idea what to expect. She took her backpack and headed over to the beanbag area, where there was some tea set up, and grabbed a cup of steaming Chamomile. She took a seat and awaited instructions from the professor.

I wonder what we are going to do with these backpacks. The tea was a nice touch, though. I suppose everyone will leave me alone, as usual. I need to make an effort to show my classmates that I am not the cold person they believe me to be. I have no idea why they think of me as such an ice queen. Just because I am not very social, that does not mean that I am completely closed off to making friends. Maybe this trip will help me to make a few.

She sipped her tea as the professor began explaining about the backpacks and what the class was going to do. It sounded much like a simple camping exercise out in the woods, but Leona could tell the trip was intended to allow the class to interact and connect with nature. If they were supposed to commune with nature, Leona thought that she might try and commune with a river or something. She had always felt drawn to water and thought this class period would be a good opportunity to connect with it.

We are going to hike?! I hope my stamina can withstand the hike long enough until we reach the campsite. I have never been hiking before, and as long as I do not push my body further than its limits, I should be just fine. I may be fully recovered from the sickness I gained from the biological weapon attack, but the sickness has still left its mark on my body. I tire a little more easily than I used to, and that is not even taking into account using my hand to hand capabilities. I should still be careful. And, now that I have had some tea, I should use the bathroom before we leave.

Leona politely, and silently, excused herself from the classroom and went to use the loo. After using the loo, she returned and prepared to leave. The professor finally gave instructions that the class was going to set out any moment, so Leona strapped on her backpack and got ready to follow her classmates and professor out into the woods. After setting out, Leona took a spot at the back of the line and followed the rest of her classmates out of the school. She heard her professor tell them that they did not need to stay in line, but Leona found no need to group up or spread out. Sure, she wanted to make friends, but she did not know the first thing about making friends and she did not want to just go up to someone and ask to be friends with him or her. She assumed, like everyone else, he or she would see Leona as the frigid ice queen and refuse her friendship, so she just hung back a safe, but still close, distance from her classmates as they hiked toward the campsite.

Then, the professor began passing out pieces of parchment and explaining the class was going to take part in a scavenger hunt. The rules were simple, the items on the list could easily be found in close proximity to where the class was, so they did not need to travel very far and they could work alone or in groups. Leona chose to work alone and walked off to search for her list of items: an asphodel root, to be dried at a later date, dittany leaves and stem, not to be set on fire, a full length mallow sweet herb, for stargazing tonight, and a small bundle of balm, because you never knew when you would need it. Working efficiently, but carefully, Leona eventually found her entire list of items. She had no care to be one of the first ones who found anything, as she had no need for special treats, but she did it to participate in class and have a bit of fun. She brought her items up to her professor and awaited further instructions.

Her eyes followed where he indicated, and she nodded once, just briefly, rolling her lips together. Clem wasn't exactly sure if it would be socially acceptable to get any closer to him, but after all, one of the things they'd been told to retrieve was just right there next to him. In comparison to the person who'd found the Mallowsweet, she didn't care much about it at all, but she could use it as an excuse to close the distance between them. And, perhaps, if she played her cards right, she could use being shit at listening to directions as an excuse to tag along with him and mooch off of his scavenger hunting skills. She trudged through the clearing, using long, rather uncomfortable strides only to stop a few meters away. This was near enough, for now. She almost felt like she was cornering an unpredictable animal, but upon rethinking that metaphor, she understood that she was a lot more like a feral beast than Lionel. Plain sight that she'd acted like an ass more than once, wasn't it?

With far less precision than her counterpart, Clementine went down into an unladylike squat with a quiet grunt and plucked a few stalks right off, not bothering to do the twisting motion he had. The plant couldn't feel anything--it didn't have any pain receptors, but a clean break was better, anyway. Too bad that Clementine was a glutton for punishment. Despite being an athlete, her gracefulness came in short supply most days, so she staggered back to her feet and tripped forward before righting herself again, swearing under her breath.

"Uhh," The Gryffindor breathed out and said it at the same time, wincing and scratching her head as she waffled. She wanted to go, really, but she didn't want it to end quite as horrifically as their last several chit-chats. She was fairly certain he also didn't want to invite her to come along and was just being polite, but maybe not. Where was Betsy Book--Jacqueline? Where was Jacqueline? Maybe with the nice blonde girl who never talked, Éilís. And Meredith, who was nice enough, but sort of just a more talkative clone of Jacqueline. Clem bit her lip as she thought hard. She knew that apologizing to Jacqueline, as much as she unequivocally did not want to, was an important part of both her recovery and making things right, or as right as they could be, with Lionel again.

"Yeah, I'll come." She answered with a frown and another hasty nod, probably looking too troubled to look very decided on the matter. Clem had to jog to catch up with him--another affirmation he was still shooting up like a genetically modified beanstalk. She thought of that weird muggle fable. "Listen, um. I'm not here to mooch off your ingredient-hunting or anything else," Clem pressed her lips together for a second and stared at the ground, tripping over a hidden stick. "I just want to tell you how sorry I am that I've been. Difficult. And I'm working on improving my... behavior,"

The Emerson was glad that her friend agreed with her so openly. "Yes, I'm concerned for them!" Meredith gestured to the younger students, her friend Abby amongst them. "The poor dears can't really defend themselves if something goes wrong, can they?" As Deirdre suggested asking Professor Ajay for something else, Mer scratched her forearms as she frowned. The Ravenclaw was cautious and conflict-averse by nature and she didn't really want to make a big scene over her dietary choices. "Oh," she began, uncertain how to reply. "Do you really think I should? I mean, it's not her fault... she couldn't have known." It wasn't exactly a secret, but it wasn't like the staff could watch each and student intently during meal times just in case one of them didn't fit the norm. Still, Deirdre did have a point that perhaps the Professor had thought of it but that all she had to do was ask for it. "I'll be right back," she told the Slytherin gently, as she turned towards the Professor, "I'll just go ask quickly."

The Ravenclaw did so, and returned right to Deirdre's side with a small smile as the group was ready to go into the forest. Mer didn't like the idea of spreading out but at the same time she was curious and she did want to explore the forest. Luckily, she and Deirdre remained within an easy distance of Professor Ajay so that when she called the group of students over, they were already fairly close-by. The Emerson witch knew that the plant was Alihotsy, and she knew of its use in laughing potions but she did not feel like answering in class that particular day. Her mouth fell open and she whispered words of surprise to herself as she noted the younger students eating it. The caring girl was ready to intervene and help them somehow, but Professor Ajay had already thought of the solution. Though Merrie was still concerned a little about the trip, the fact that the Professor had obviously come prepared made her feel a little better about it.

She was open-minded about a scavenger hunt, perhaps even a little excited at the thought even though her companion did not seem so enthusiastic about it. Distracted, the Ravenclaw wondered what the special treat at the end could possibly be, before finally turning to acknowledge Deirdre and what she was saying. "Haha, I think the wording is more an incentive to the younger students. If you ignore the beautiful surroundings, its really just standard gathering ingredients as usual." That didn't really bother Meredith at all, as she was conscientious about her work, but she definitely appreciated the change in scenery to do said work in.

Happy that Deirdre assumed they'd be together, Meredith let out a chipper hum of acknowledgement, followed by an "Okay!" as they set off together. Naturally talented in Potions, Mer knew exactly what the Asphodel flower looked like and so she agreed that it would be easy to find. They were both intelligent witches, after all. "Yes, it will! They are beautiful flowers. Asphodel has that odd straight line down the middle of the petal, if I remember correctly." Merrie followed where Deirdre was gesturing, smiling as she saw the white flowers get closer and closer. She knelt down on the ground beside them, cupping one of the flowers in her hand, her eyes narrowing as she examined the flower. "This looks like Asphodel to me!" Mer beamed up at Deirdre, her eyes twinkling with delight that they'd found it so quickly. "Let's dig it up!" She pulled out her wand, not wanting to get her hands dirty and wanting to practice her wordless magic instead, and started removing the earth beneath the plant into a little pile so that she could put it back once she had the entire plant in her hand. Grabbing the now free plant in her hand, she turned to the Slytherin with a big grin. "What's next?"

Brietta was ashamed to admit that she wasn't very good at Herbology at all. The Slytherin loved nature, as a whole, but it just didn't seem to like her very much back. She couldn't really blame it, though. Having grown more timid than her first year self, the idea of going into the Forbidden Forest didn't sound appealing to the English witch at all. Still, Brietta listened to Professor Ajay dutifully even when she thought the Professor was talking a load of old twaddle. She liked being competitive, and even more so, she liked winning. The Toft wanted to be able to say that she had the best tent. It was difficult to be the best at listening to the wind, or whatever rubbish Professor Ajay was speaking.

The Slytherin witch looked around at the fellow students in the class, hoping to catch a familiar (and more importantly, friendly) face. She spied Aase, Jari and Abby together in one the corners and shook her head at herself before moving away. Since the dome separated them for a period of time, Brietta stopped hanging out with them and had found new friends instead. The Professor announced it was time to leave and she scowled, lifting her chin defiantly as she begrudgingly followed the group. Brietta didn't enjoy adventures anymore. She liked to be safe, secure and comfortable.

Still not spotting anyone she really liked in the crowd forming a circle around a plant, Brietta stood off by her own. She could not recognise the plant, she realised, and therefore she could not say the name or its use in a potion. She noted Carey start to eat the plant and the Slytherin couldn't help but roll her eyes, tutting vaguely in his direction in disgust. Idiots like that, who eat unidentified plants, deserve to die. Brietta thought bitterly. Once Professor Ajay informed the group it was Alihotsy, Brietta looked down at the glove as she tugged at the seam of it, disappointed in herself. If she had known it was Alihotsy, she could have easily answered what potion it was used for. She sometimes wondered if it was a curse that she was excellent in Potions but useless in Herbology.

Grabbing the list, Brietta got to the task at hand knowing full well that she had very little clue what she was doing and what half the plants even looked like. She was at least fairly confident that she kind of knew what balm looked like, and so she decided to go in search of that first. The English witch prayed, however, that a friend well-versed in Herbology would find her and help her.

The thirteen-year-old was in the middle of whispering to his friends, when he noticed a blondish-brown headed Hufflepuff girl hovering.  He was worried she would snitch about his stash to the teacher so he stopped talking. Carey did not know much about @ABIGAIL LAWSON other than she was quiet and tended to lurk and mostly followed her classmates around like a shadow. Which was why he was surprised she spoke up.

He listened to her request and looked at the Hufflepuffs around him ( @Jari Trickett@Aase Trickett-Cassoway and @Aldous Cresswell). The lone Gryffindor gave a non-committal shrug, “It is ok with me, if it ok with them. Just collect enough for everyone.” They would likely know the Abby-girl better than him, seeing that they were all Hufflepuffs. He would leave it up to them, although he did not think they would reject her.

He grabbed his bag from Jari with a simple “Thanks.” He decided to not tell the new comer about the pastries. If she helps out she will get her share. “Well, I better get looking for dittany. Meet back near the teacher as soon as you find the plant.” He said as he turned away from them, hoping they would concentrate on finding their plant on the list.

Carey walked through the forest making an effort to look like he is scanning the ground. He did not want to let them know he had no idea what dittany looked like. Once he could not see them anymore he found a large exposed root that sufficed well enough as a bench. He pulled out his herbology book out of his bag and cracked it open to Dittany. There he discovered that the herb was known for it uses in love potions and healing qualities. It looked like every plant that Carey has seen. A stick with leaves. Still he was going to make an effort to find it so he made a mental note of the leaf shape and skimmed the page for any other relevant information. Under location there was a note about it was originally from the Mediterranean area.

Precisely why a Mediterranean plant will be hanging out in a Scottish forest Carey had no Idea. Still he noted it grew on mountainsides and gorges, so he started to search the area for such a location. He followed the dip in the forest floor, hoping it would lead to a ravine or a gorge. He kept open his book in one hand and scanned the dip deepening in the forest floor looking for any plant that looks like dittany.

Some single shoots near the shade of a tree caught his eye. Examining them he found their leaves looked similar to dittany, but the stem type and pattern did not. Still, he picked five stems in case it was. He also made sure he used his glove, incase it was something nastier than Alihotsy. He did not want to make the same mistake twice. It it was a young Dittany, he could check of dittany off his list and if it was not, Professor Ajay seemed the time to like students asking questions. You never know he might even earn some extra house points.

He was about to make his way back down to the ravine to keep looking, when he heard a call out in the forest.  Anyone? Hello? It was a females voice, which sounded familiar.

“Yeah!” Carey called back. He could not place the voice but he swear he heard it before maybe in the Gryffindor common room. He rapped the dittany-like plants in the list paper and put it quickly in his backpack. He picked up his book and started to walk up the hill towards the caller. Away from the gorge the trees were more dense. The dark shadows of the trees gave him the creeps. He started to wonder if there was something in the forest that could mimic voices. His feet faltered and he stopped. He took his wand out and examine the trees wearily. He could hear footsteps. His racing heart settled when he saw a familiar head of light brown hair appeared and disappeared between the trees. It was Jane or was it JANAE…. TATE.  “Yo, @Janae Tate  ." Carey called out waving his wand hand. "You have any luck with the plant list?”

Hufflepuffs were always friendly, but nothing beats a Gryffindor. They were always dependable and can be relied on to helped each other.

Lionel's eyes narrowed as she nearly fell over. Was she okay? The thought crossed his mind that she might be drunk, even in broad daylight, like now, but he would prefer to believe otherwise. There was not yet a preponderance of evidence, he thought. He turned back and slowed down a little as she said she would come, his lips tightening a little thoughtfully. Clementine probably didn't care much for the scavenger hunt itself, so getting it over with could be her primary motivation; then again, Clementine was a perceptive and determined sort of person. She wouldn't put up a minute more with him, no matter howdesperate, if she didn't have some other objective. She had other friends here, after all; Lionel had seen Janae in the initial crowd.

"Mmm," he said noncommittally as she reached him and started talking, turning back towards the path in front of him. It probably wasn't helpful to point out that he'd already gathered that himself. He turned back towards her with another suspicious glance as she tripped again. He was the one who ought to be doing that, not her--she wasn't going through much of a growth spurt.

Suddenly, she apologized to him, and he nearly stopped dead in his tracks but forced himself to keep going at a slower pace. Clementine had never seemed very interested in changing anything about herself. It was one of the reasons he had thought well of her, in a way. Lionel was very independent; he didn't think very much of pushovers, of people who tried to mold themselves into what they thought other people wanted, unless it was just a kind of façade to accomplish something. And then he didn't think much of facades unless it was pretty clear, at least to him, what was real and what was not. But it was that quality, too, that had spurred his conviction in the words that started this phase of their interactions. "Mm," he uttered again, briefer. What was he supposed to say? Politeness suggested saying it was nothing, but that wouldn't quite be true. He didn't know what she meant by improving her behavior--the drinking? The rudeness?

And he didn't know if it made any difference. She had a boyfriend, and where their yearmates had once formed something of a circle, Lionel felt it diverging under the pressure of stress from their experiences and the influx of individuals from other years. No matter how much crap Jazz gave him about it all, Lionel didn't hate what his life had become. "Thanks, I guess," he said eventually, stepping gingerly over some fallen branches. "How is that going?"

The trees thinned around them, afternoon light streaming in. Lionel thought absently that it might be considered sort of beautiful. It lit up her hair; it had been a while since he'd seen her like this. It was really a lot easier when they weren't yelling at one another. Keeping one eye fixed on the ground, Lionel finally noticed a sprawl of serrated leaves. Double checking his notes, he compared the picture to the plant and gingerly rubbed it with his fingers, sniffing them for a lemony mint sort of smell. "Here." He pulled out another piece of parchment for this bundle.

See, here was the thing: Clementine was particularly used to getting grunts from boys that they tried to pass off as legitimate answers. They were answers in one way or another, she supposed: they certainly conveyed the degree of detachment she thought they maybe felt. The other option was that they had so many thoughts or responses piled up in their brains that it was just easier to grunt impartially, but she’d never know which one it was. She could assume, but that was about it.

Perhaps she hadn’t really been clear enough. Her head was drawn to the influx of light filtering through the trees and she tilted her face toward it, squinting and wrinkling her nose at first only to give up and close her eyes. The sun was beautiful, but it was too bright. Some sacrifices had to be made to bask in its presence, and sometimes it burned if she lingered too long. Clementine wondered if this was the sentiment the people close to her meant when they said she was intimidating or abrasive or. That it was no wonder nobody wanted to see her or something of the sort. She thought she’d picked up that much and then she’d gotten lost. A lot of this had made her feel lost, and not in the adventuresome way, in the I want to get away from my own identity and sense of self because I don’t like it anymore way.

Clementine had always pretended that others’ judgments of her didn’t matter or get inside her head, of course, as it was just the thing to do and no Gryffindor was supposed to pay those any mind. Most people were too scared or indifferent to make any negative thoughts known and if they did, she had no issue shrugging them off. The few people whose opinions affected her more than she cared to admit--small in number as they were--seemed to be the only ones she ever fixated on. She remembered his words, unrecognizable as many of them had been, and felt a sharp pang twinge in her chest. How annoying it was that she cared so much.

The Gryffindor wondered if mousy Ravenclaws were capable of caring so much. Or self-destructing so much. Maybe they went hand in hand.

“Going alright,” She began, her voice far more meek than seemed normal. How exactly did one breach the subject that she was no longer a danger to herself and others? “Not without difficulty, I have… quit. All my nighttime habits. With some help from Professor Blevins.” Clementine cleared her throat and took his offering, nodding her thanks. “And I’m trying to make the other amends because there are… quite a few I need to make.” The blonde swallowed hard, attempting to force the lump in her throat that always seemed to make its appearance when he was around back down. “You and. Jacqueline. Included.”

Before the group disbanded and made their way off into the forest alone or with a few friends Nazreen managed to pull a few select students aside. She did her best to catch them before they had gone too far. She smiled to @Meredith Emerson before whispering to them that their bags did not contain meat but rather a special plant based jerky she had dried just for them. She wanted to make sure they felt comfortable and she did her best to accomodate for the values and desicions of each of them. Nazreen might of been a carnivore but she absolutely respected that it wasn't the choice everyone made. And she was all about letting them make their own choices, their own mistakes, their own memories. It was all theirs to do. She shooed them all off politely with a motion of her hands and a giggle as they began to trample through the woods in search of the things on the list.

Nazreen hoped she had given them each enough time to gather the materials they had collected but if not she had some extras of each of the items for them to grab from. She ventured to the clearing she'd picked out for their campsite and managed to get a fire and some water boiling before looking up at the sky. It was getting darker, but the sun was still over the horizon for now. Using her wand she sent sparks up into the darkening sky to mark her position for them. Each of them had a map in their bags in case they needed more help finding their way back but it was going to be dark in not too long and she wanted to get them to the clearing with enough time to set up their tents and bed rolls. Once more than a handful of them had returned she motioned for them to join her near the campfire.

"So how did every one do? Anyone get them all?"

[[ooc, even if you havent posted your character finding all of the ingredients feel free to say that they did if it makes sense! and its not too late to say that they got back first, if you want.]]
