goodnight bad morning [nazreen]
« on: August 04, 2018, 10:50:10 PM »
early may 2002

“Really,” Fflur confided, taking another sip of her tea, “Can’t believe I hadn’t thought of this.” She held a cup of Nazreen’s specialty tea in her right hand, her cigarette held lightly in her left. Two vices at once, positively multitasking, going over and over the disbelief that she hadn’t thought of this before.

She leaned back against the potting bench, her legs outstretched in front of her, crossed at the ankles. Her all-black, topped with leather, fully muggle outfit looked pretty out of place in the private greenhouse, but who cared? It was past midnight on a Tuesday. She regretted not being nice to Naz any sooner, but there really hadn’t been any need to be nice to the other professors until they were literally the only adults left in the area for her to talk to.

“Really, good idea,” she repeated, for probably the tenth time. “Ten points to Gryffindor.” She raised her tea cup in a toast before taking another healthy sip, fully seeing the irony in her actions. Toasting with tea, while using that to keep her from drinking something that certainly wasn’t tea. She was convinced she was more equipped to handle her drinking problem this time around, though the fact that she had internalized it as a ‘problem’ should have given her more to think about.

Fflur snorted, replaying what she said in her head. “I wonder if that really works, points to professors.” She took a long drag from her cigarette before lazily reaching down to tap off a bit of ash into an empty flower pot. “Ten points to me,” she threw out, seeing if she felt any different as she did so.

She sat up suddenly, thankfully not sloshing any tea down her front. “ We could just go look at the hourglasses. Let’s find out.”

Nazreen had just finished drying out a bunch of perfect plants for some of her signature tea and who better to share it with than a new friend. She was excited to have Fflur in her greenhouses again and she felt light and giddy as they sat together chatting. Of course, that feeling could of been from the tea, but that was exactly what it was brewed for so she was far from concerned. She bobbed her head slowly to the soft humming music one of the toads in the planter box behind her was creating and felt her worries slipping away. Fflur's realization made her chuckle but her repeating astonishment of it made her laugh. She sipped on her tea and smiled.

"Oooh." She trailed off as her dark chestnut eyes followed a vine that wrapped up the side of the greenhouse and to the ceiling. Staring above her at the intricate details of the gnarled and twisted vines still left over from the dome she shrugged her shoulders. Speaking half to Fflur and half to the world around them she mused out loud. "Never thought of that... I suppose it could..." She looked back down from the vines and at her half full glass, swooshing it around in a circle and enjoying the aroma it released. This was far from her first batch of this particular brew but she was sure it was her best yet. It was good for the nerves, good for anxiety, and good for friends.

"Ten points to Fflur!" She said in a matter of fact voice, chuckling and holding her glass out for the toast with a bright smile. It wasn't cheating, Fflur earned those points. At the other professor's next words Nazreen blinked a few times, looked at the door which seemed further and further away by the second, and then looked back at her. The idea sounded great but it also sounded like so much work. Her legs felt tingly and she felt heavier than normal but Nazreen wasn't a quitter.

"Maybe we should go do that...." She trailed off again, meaning to get up and move but never actually doing it.

Having now earned twenty points, Fflur was nearly motivated to get up. Nearly. Maybe for fifty points. “Maybe we should,” she agreed, not moving any farther than Nazreen did — none at all. Instead she sipped at her tea and leaned back against the potting bench. “Potting bench,” she said as she thought about it, snorting at the appropriateness of it. Her gaze flicked upwards, having seen the other professor concentrate on the ceiling earlier, but what she found was rather uninteresting: more plants.

“Maybe we should,” she stated again, more resolutely this time, though this time the only movement she made was to bring her cigarette to her lips and taking a deep breath. The smell of burning tobacco drowned out the other smells around her, the smell of damp earth and vegetation, the smells of the general outdoors.

She bent her knees slowly, bringing them closer to her chest and lazily resting her cigarette hand on them. Her legs felt heavier, but she ignored it. “I’ll give you points if you get up first,” she offered, hoping that would be incentive enough. If Nazreen got up, then Fflur could, too. But she wasn’t about to leave her new friend behind to have the greenhouse all to herself. “C’mon. Five points for Nazreen,” she said with a laugh. “For setting a good example.”

Fflur took another large swig of her tea, finishing it quickly. She wasn’t equating much of a difference between the tea and any other beverage she might drink and she certainly wouldn’t have been able to earn points for drinking at a reasonable pace.

She couldn't stop herself from chuckling when Fflur mentioned the potting bench. Simple jokes always made her laugh but especially in the state she was currently in. Nazreen forgot that she had been the one to look up first and her gaze followed Fflur's back up to the ceiling of the greenhouse. She was once more enthralled with the blackened vines left over from the terrible year before this one. She wondered if she would ever get them down from there but honestly she kind of wanted to keep them. They served as a reminder of what they had all been through (not that many of the traumatized students needed the reminder) but more than that they were a trophy of what they had survived. This greenhouse was still pretty much off limits to the students, hence the special tea plants growing here, but the vines weren't really dangerous anymore.

Barely shifting when Fflur agreed that maybe they should head out Nazreen did look back down at her new friend. "Five points for Nazreen!" Thrusting her cup forward once more to toast she over shot it and lost her balance on the wooden ledge of the planter box she was sitting on. A bit of tea shot into the air and she fell backward into the box behind her, dangerously close to the warted toad that abruptly stopped singing and hopped away. Giggling loudly she found the entire thing way too entertaining.

"Alright, alright...." She said, holding her hands out in front of her as she grew strangely serious for a split second. She blinked, sitting forward and trying to hoist herself up out of the box and finally standing. And then she promptly went back to being the opposite of serious. "Your turn." She wasn't normally this giddy but she was always super friendly. Some might even call it too friendly. She eyeballed Fflur's cup and then spoke, leaning over dramatically to look into it like it was a great big ocean. "Want more?"

“Make it ten!” Fflur toasted with her empty cup, happy to have nothing to spill on herself when she laughed, her whole body a part of it. Her laugh turned into a cough that she buried in the crook of her elbow. It took her a few more seconds before she could manage to ask, “You alright?” before laughing again. That probably made it sound slightly less sincere, but she was truly concerned for the professor -- who would make them more tea if she couldn’t?

Fflur nodded, glad to see that all was well. “Alright,” she returned equally seriously, though the grin on her face betrayed her. “Alright,” she said one more time, watching Nazreen stand. “Not bad, not bad.” She nodded thoughtfully, as if she were assessing every movement for proper form. “My turn,” she agreed, distracted from standing before she could even try as Nazreen spoke again.

She held out her cup to the other woman with another smile. “Sounds positively delightful.” After successfully handing her cup over, Fflur stowed her cigarette between her lips and hoisted herself up, both hands pushing herself up from the ground with quite a bit of effort. There was the first initial lightheadedness, but it passed after a few more seconds, and Fflur moved her cigarette down by her side, directing her cloud of smoke upwards toward that apparently-very-interesting ceiling.

“Let’s take it for the road.” It was half suggestion, half demand.

Once the tea was settled, Fflur took a large sip, too large considering the temperature, and smiled again. “Entrance Hall,” she stated, more to herself than to Nazreen, reminding herself where they were headed. If they didn’t go soon, Fflur would probably forget. “Hourglasses. Pointsss.” She drew out the ‘s’ on the last word as she raised and lowered her eyebrows a few times.

She watched Fflur managing to get herself off of the potting bench and laughed inwardly at the thought of potting bench again before taking the cup from the other woman. Hurriedly, or at least in her mind but actually quite slowly, she moved to where the kettle was and began preparing them some tea for the trip. She was always down for an adventure but very rarely did her walk abouts bring her into the castle. Nazreen spent most of her time outside these days, preferring the breeze in her hair and the bugs in her shoes. Even during meals she usually brought her plate out to the steps and hung around until the sun went down.

After what she thought was less than a minute but was really more like four Nazreen returned to where her friend was and held out one of the two glasses of filled tea. She hadn't added any milk or honey to this one, finding it strange in the heavily herbal brew, but she would run back for it if Fflur wanted. She was very accommodating, really she probably should of been a Hufflepuff. If it wasn't for her bold and mischievous side she probably would of been a shoe in. Merlin knew she huffed and puffed enough, except for when she was drinking the special tea instead.

"Onward!" She said, because now that had entirely become a thing and while she couldn't remember if she'd taken the kettle off the flame she could remember that. Following Fflur out of the greenhouse she flicked her hand to lock the door like she always did but in her impaired state a few empty pots flew off of the table and crashed to the floor instead. "Shhhh." She held her finger to her lips and whispered to Fflur like someone was going to give them detention for making a mess and then remembered that they were the ones who gave out detentions and started laughing again. Locking the door the boring muggle way she followed Fflur to the entrance hall and stopped when they reached the jars.

"Did it work?" She side, head turning full on side ways as she eyeballed the glass containers filled with shiny gems.

Fflur would have clapped her hands together to show her excitement for their unfolding plan, but her hands were full of vices. “Onward.” The air was cooler outside the greenhouse, and Fflur rolled her shoulders back as she waited for Nazreen to finish up. “Christ--” Fflur laughed, closing her mouth to suppress it when she was implored to be quiet. She rolled her eyes as the door was finally locked and flicked ash from her cigarette rather lazily just before stepping inside and over to all the points.

“Dunno. How many did we have before?” We, like they were part of the points-earning student body. Fflur took another step closer, her face nearly touching the glass, her vision filled mostly with rubies. She could see no difference in the level of stones -- stones, ha -- from when she had walked past them on her way to the greenhouse. Of course, she never really looked at them that closely, certainly not as close as she was staring at them now.

She took a step back and cleared her throat dramatically. “Five points for Nazreen.” For a second, Fflur thought nothing was happening, that maybe her professor’s power button was switched off outside of school hours, but then five rubies dropped neatly into the lower portion of the hourglass. With wide eyes, she turned to the other woman. “Lookie there,” she pointed two fingers and a cigarette at the hourglass, as if Nazreen could have possibly forgotten why they were there.

“Five points to Fflur.” Five more rubies dropped, and Fflur took another step back with a smug look on her face. “We earned them, y’know.”

Nazreen was pretty sure it shouldn't work but that didn't make it any less amazing when it did. She bounced up and down when she saw the rubies dropping into the jar and forgot completely that it was past midnight and they should probably be a bit quieter. Clapping her hand on her thigh and spilling a little bit of tea on the other hand she licked it off and looked back at Fflur. Honestly she would of assumed the powers that be would of created this spell a little bit more efficiently but she really hadn't given it much thought before just now. She assumed others probably hadn't either. They probably also hadn't thought they'd have to fend off this sort of behavior either. "Certainly." She agreed, holding what was left of her tea up for yet another toast.

Looking back at the house points her smile rose again and so did her voice. "Five points to the best flying professor to ever live!" She exclaimed, smiling brightly as she paid her friend a well deserved compliment and then watching in horror as sapphire colored jewels dropped into the Ravenclaw jar.

"Whoops..." She said before giggling, not meaning anything by it. "Five points from Ravenclaw...." She tried to stop laughing but she couldn't. She wasn't being mean but the tea was really kicking in and the laughter couldn't stop. The blue jewels that had just dropped into the tank were sucked back out and into oblivion where they had came from right before her eyes and she was memorized by it.

"Fflur, the magic... its so beautiful. Five points to Gryffindor..." She said as she let her basically empty tea cup fall to her side and drip onto the stone tiles. Moving closer to the red jar she rivaled Fflur for creepiest closeness to them for a moment. Bright wide eyes staring into the abyss of colored gems like they were the greatest thing ever made.

Fflur raised her glass to acknowledge the toast, acknowledging it further by taking a large swallow from it. She heard Nazreen’s words and looked expectantly at the Gryffindor hourglass, a grin plastered across her face. The movement came out the corner of her eye, and Fflur had to take another step back to take a good look at the Ravenclaw points, the sapphires still settling. “Well, fuck you too, Hogwarts.” Fflur at least had the forethought to not kick the marble pedestal in retaliation.

She huffed at Nazreen’s laughter, as if she could have possibly planned that betrayal; of course, Fflur would never claim to be the best professor, flying or otherwise, but they didn’t have to be quite so obvious about it. “That’s right.” Fflur took a drag from her cigarette and exhaled in the direction of the sapphires, showing them who’s boss., as Nazreen deducted those five traitorous points.

“It’s okay,” she reasoned, certainly not seeing any beauty in it, nothing past the fact that they were standing next to so many galleons-worth of jewels. She didn’t even want to imagine what might have happened if they attempted to tamper with them any more than they already were. “That’s better,” she concluded, watching the Gryffindor rubies start to pile up.

Scooching over a tiny bit, Fflur made room for the other professor to get a better look. “Ten points to me, for having to stand here and be insulted.” She nodded, feeling immensely better not that she felt she had been paid the proper reparations. Fifteen-year-old Fflur would have died to know that thirty-two-year-old Fflur would have this sort of power. Fifteen-year-old Fflur probably wouldn’t have abused it, though, and most definitely wouldn’t be standing there, smoking and staring.

“Are we winning?” Fflur stepped back again and tried to look down the line. The piles looked more or less the same, really. “All this and they couldn’t put numbers on them, really?”

Nazreen tried to be quiet but Fflurs curse words sent her back on the laughter train as she covered her mouth with her hand and snorted. She hadn't had this much fun in far too long. It was nice to get out, even if they were inside the castle, and let loose a little, even if they were setting a terrible example. Luckily it was late and there shouldn't be any students out and about. When Fflur moved a little Nazreen quickly moved into the empty space she left behind and let her nose touch the glass.

It really was amazing magic even if it wasn't all that smart.

She watched as Fflur awarded another ten points to herself for being insulted and nodded because she honestly agreed. The jars had been rude and they needed to make up for it. Nazreen was a firm proponent of being kind to each other even when that included creatures, plants, and inanimate objects. The world would be a whole lot better if everything was nicer. She set her cup down on the floor near where she was standing and then resumed staring into the glimmering jewel piles.

Taking a moment to tap on the glass jar with one finger she shrugged her shoulders. "I think this one is bigger." She answered pointing at the sunlight yellow stones to her right and realizing that Fflur was so so right. Why wasn't there some kind of counter. The Hufflepuff and Gryffindor jars looked so close to one another in levels in was hard to tell who was in front of the other and Nazreen found it confusing. "Maybe we should test it, just in case.... Ten points to Hufflepuff!" She called out, waving her hands above her hand whimsically as she did before realizing she awarded points to the wrong house.

Right... Just in case.

“Shh,” Fflur reminded her, though she wasn’t doing anything to try and keep her own voice down. They could just give any student that was out at this hour a detention, and any professor? Turns out they would be able to take points from them if they wanted. There was no risk of running into another Gryffindor professor, so that was probably the best option.

She nodded, looking as serious as she possibly could, as she considered the levels in the piles. “Yes, I do indeed think you are correct.” Fflur stepped toward the Hufflepuff glass and leaned in, her nose almost touching the glass yet again. “It’s a conspiracy,” she concluded, knowing that could be the only possible reason that Hufflepuff would be in the lead.

Fflur nodded excitedly, happy that Nazreen had the idea to test the whole system. But just like before, when Hogwarts had betrayed her and her teaching abilities, Nazreen gave points to Hufflepuff. That time was on purpose, she was sure. She laughed, but she refused to accept it. “Well, eleven to Gryffindor, then,” she said, somehow finding that a more logical solution than deducting any from the badgers.

“Really now,” Fflur turned, a hand on her hip, and took another step toward Nazreen. Their quiet -- really not very quiet at all -- conversation was interrupted by a loud shattering sound, and it took her a moment to realize that she had been the cause. Fflur looked down, finally seeing Nazreen’s discarded cup, not really looking like a cup anymore. “Well,” she snorted, covering her mouth with the back of her hand that was still holding her cigarette. “That wasn’t a good place for that,” she added with another laugh.

"Can't argue with that, now can I?" She said looking at the shattered cup on the floor in front of her feet.

it was hard not to laugh and shhhh the broken glass at the exact same time. The fact that inanimate objects neither cared or heard her pleas of silence was lost on Nazreen as she held one finger to her lips. The crashing sound had broken up their conversation but surprisingly (and even more so than when she was sober) Naz remembered what they had been talking about. "Pretty sure the History teacher is cheating anyway." She said with another giggle. It took all of ten seconds before she was absolutely appalled by what she had said. Nazreen had never been the petty or gossiping type but something about acutally having a girl friend was bringing out the cattiness inside of her tonight. Her eyes grew wide for a minute, a little bit of shame, and then she forgot about it and laughed some more.

Slumping against the glass jars full of brightly colored jewels as she found it harder and harder to stay upright the former Gryffindor grinned at her counterpart. "He's always giving points to the Ravenclaws." Nazreen wasn't jealous of how smart they were, not any more any way. Fifteen year old Nazreen probably had been. Her father was a smart man, brilliant really, and he had always expected so much of his daughters. He'd never expected her to up and quit school to take a year off and visit India that is for sure. She still felt like he was disappointed in her for that. Nazreen's less than sober mind threatened to delve into less than amusing topics but she fought hard against it, returning to the topic of the history teacher.

"Can't say he doesn't have a nice arse though." She giggled, wishing her cup wasn't gone.

Fflur snorted again, “No, you certainly can’t.” Nazreen started shushing her, or shushing the cup, Fflur wasn’t sure -- but it didn’t matter, because both options were making her laugh. She nudged one of the larger shards of ceramic with the toe of her boot, looking down at it sadly. The simple fix she and Nazreen were more than qualified to make was the last thing on her mind; “It was such a nice cup, too.” She shrugged again, her mood shifting back once more into giggly -- or as close to giggly as Fflur Blevins could get. Really cool giggles, she assumed.

“He for sure is cheating.” Fflur threw her hands up in mock frustration, ignoring that she had just awarded herself more points tonight than she had probably earned throughout her entire education. Minor details. There was also the small fact that she tended to give more points to Gryffindor in her own lessons but she had a very simple explanation for that bias: the Gryffindors were just that much better at quidditch. It was only fair.

She was still standing next to the shattered cup as Nazreen started sinking to the floor. Fflur sipped at her drink as he watched, shrugging again. “Like of course the Ravenclaws got the answer right.” She glared at the sapphires in their hourglass. “Sooo smart.” No, she didn’t have any hard feelings or deeply rooted anger towards the house as a whole or any one Ravenclaw in particular (read: she did). “Pfft.” Her sister’s face flashed in her mind and Fflur waved a hand at the hourglass like she was doing wandless magic. “Ten points from Ravenclaw.” A handful of jewels jumped up to the top portion of the glass. That was better.

Fflur took a couple steps forward as she finished her cigarette and stubbed it out on the Ravenclaw hourglass; she snorted again at Nazreen’s next comment. “Well, you’re not wrong.” Sure, she had noticed his backside. Hogwarts was boring, what else was she supposed to look at when she was avoiding lesson planning? “I’d appreciate if he had a face that wasn’t so…” She wanted to call it ‘displeasing to the eye’ but she settled on, “Goddamn weird.” She laughed again. “Can’t walk behind him all the time, can you?”

She did whatever she could to not let her mind drift off to thoughts of Robin. Missing him only made her feel lonelier, and that wasn’t something she needed now that she was finally spending time with someone else here and not hating every single moment of it. “Here.” She handed Naz her half empty cup and took her time lowering herself to the floor, leaning back against the whichever glass was closest. “Five points to Fflur because sharing is caring.”

It was settled, Ravenclaw was cheating it was of course the Gryffindor's job to police them. Who else would stand up to such injustice, such blatant disregard for the rules? If not for the Gryffindors who else would uphold the letter of the law and keep the House Point competition fair and true? Nazreen nodded her head pointedly, proudly, as Fflur took points from the cheating little birdies and then laughed loudly at the other witch's comment about the professor. Louder than she probably should of, loud enough to grab the attention of any nosey little Prefect who happened to be doing their job that evening. Nazreen loved her students, she always welcomed them at the greenhouse, encouraged them to stand up and go against the grain but right now she really hoped none of them showed up.

"Truer-er words were never spoken..." She slurred slightly, taking the cup that was handed to her with both hands, just to be safe. She had to protect this cup it was the only one they had left between the two of them. Repairing the first glass had yet to even occur to the distract able Herbology professor. Sliding down to the floor to sit next to her friend she raised the glass to her mouth and finished off the liquid quickly. Wiping a bit of it off her chin with her sleeve unashamed she set the glass down on the floor, clearly not learning from previous mistakes, and turned to look at Fflur.

"Five points to Naz for graciously accepting gifts." Leaning her head up against the glass marble jar with bright golden yellow stones in it she stared up at a ceiling that seemed to go on forever. "And five points to whoever made the staircases move." Red gems fell into the jar. "And another five points to whoever hatched the Giant Squid." Never mind that she had no idea how Squids were actually born, red gems clinked against the glass. "And five points for....." She looked back down at Fflur... "What else for?"

She appreciated Nazreen’s laughter -- not that she doubted her own hilarity, but it was nice to have it confirmed from time to time. “Truer-er words,” she repeated with a crooked smile, her hands still feeling immensely heavy even after handing off the cup. She held them in front of her for a few seconds as she looked at them, double checking that they were indeed her own hands and not something new and unexpected; as far as she could tell, she was doing fine.

Fflur glanced over, only marginally rolling her eyes as Naz finished off the drink. It was her drink, she thought, but Nax made it, so she wasn’t too sure of the rules at this point anymore. She supposed there was more, or could be more, or would be more, or… whatever. She turned to face the other professor with a bit more drama to her movements than usual. Smiling lazily, Fflur nodded. “So very graciously.” She repositioned herself so she could rest her cheek against the pedestal while still looking at Naz.

She didn’t move more than her eyes as Naz continued awarding points, but from the lack of disappointment in the woman’s voice, she assumed they were all going to Gryffindor. “Hmm, erm,” Fflur shrugged one shoulder. “Five points foooor…” She trailed off having used up all of her ideas, apparently, when she had awarded them to herself. “How aboooout five points for you making us more tea?” It was late and Fflur was clearly getting tired, but it wasn’t like she had anything to do tomorrow. Except teach maybe. Was tomorrow a teaching day? Eh, she’d figure it out later.

“I’m going to need help standing up, I think,” Fflur mused, assessing the situation slowly. She held out her hands for Naz to take. “I’ll help you if you help me.” She waited for Naz to nod her understanding before trying to stand up, using the weight of her friend to stabilize her as she did the same. It took a good deal longer than standing really should have, but that was beside the point. They stood to be able to drink tea another day.

Fflur glanced at the Gryffindor hourglass, now just a tad bit fuller than the Hufflepuff one. It’d be too obvious if they tried to eke past Ravenclaw now -- they could save that for another day. “Onward?” she repeated, anxious to get her hands on another cup.
