(following this notice)

The largest of the pumpkins was nearly the size of the armchair next to it. Hagrid grew his so big that some of them had to be shrunk to fit through the Gryffindor Tower portrait hole.  Those ones, of course, were mostly used for the feast in the Great Hall. The Groundskeeper had provided Henry with a number of smaller pumpkins too, much better for personal carving—but Henry took a couple giant ones just for the gimmick. He hoped at least some Gryffindors would find the chance to take on a pumpkin wider than they were exciting enough to show up. He wanted people, so, so badly, to show up.

Henry wasn’t the kind of person that many people, himself included, might have thought of when asked to conjure up an image of a Head Boy. He wasn’t academically gifted, for one. He’d been doing far better in class the last few years, of course, and had even conjured the knives and scoops they were going to be using tonight, but there was no way he could go right on into Healing or Auroring or anything prestigious. Even professional Quidditch—he wasn’t that type of notable either. He was notable for only one reason that he could think of, and that was enthusiasm. A few years ago that thought might have depressed him. Just wanting really badly to help didn’t mean you were any good at helping, after all, and that was all enthusiasm really was. He’d always found it easy to devalue. This year, though, coming in with this outrageous display of the staff’s trust in him pinned to his robes, he’d decided that instead of wallowing he’d weaponize his enthusiasm as best he could. He was going to be approachable as shit. Raise concerns to professors, help students out, send birthday cards every day in the breakfast mail. He wanted to do special things for Gryffindor too. Hopefully Gryffindor was willing to indulge him. If they weren’t, well... It’d be a lot tougher to brush off the time he overheard a birthday boy telling his friends that Murphy should get over himself, dickface.

One last swoop of his wand, and the floor he’d cleared in front of the fireplace was covered with a dropcloth in black-and-orange check. The pumpkins and everything were set up around it, a table of popcorn balls and apple cakes at one side. It was most important that that be visible. School-sponsored events weren’t exactly a huge draw on their own, Henry knew that well enough. Hopefully if he lured enough people here with food they’d eventually start having fun.

He waved at a couple different groups of students passing from the portrait hole to the dormitory stairs, but only when he had given up trying and bit into a popcorn ball was he approached by his first takers. Henry held a hand up in embarrassment as he swallowed.

“Hi!” he said, then immediately forced his voice into a lower, less condescending tone. “You can, er, pick any of these pumpkins we’ve got and get cracking, I guess! I like to try and draw the face on first, but I dunno if it helps much.”

Well, when she’d first seen the notice, her first thought had truthfully been something along the lines of “Oh, God, I hope Henry doesn’t need my help.”

Not that Donna didn’t like being a Prefect but, Merlin’s knees, it was so much work. Well, not even that much, but enough that combined with her professors, all of ‘em going mad with power and OWLs year, and also combined with Quidditch, she was swamped. Obviously, the solution would have been to not go out for Quidditch, but no way, and fuck you.

Henry hadn’t, it seemed, and so her next thought had been along the lines of “Why wouldn’t he ask me for help? I’m a Prefect!”

Obviously this was unreasonable of her, so when the day came, she brushed off her indignation and showed up. (Of course, this was not great for her being busy as all get out, but she liked the idea of it. Art, but with a knife.) And, of course, she should at least be there in a supervisory context. Or, you know, as much of a supervisory context as she could pull off. Not that, as she arrived, she felt like she actually wanted to be here in a supervisory context. Could she carve a pumpkin too and still seem like she was being useful and responsible?

Oh, well. If there was an emergency she could leap to it. She didn’t have to be important all the time, she supposed. Good enough to be potentially useful. She supposed.

“Draw the face on,” she said, doubtfully— what, with a quill? She’d rather wing it, really. How hard could two triangles and a smile be? “That’s fine, I’ll wing it,” she said cheerfully. Go figure, one of her friends followed this immediately with a request for something to draw with.

Maybe this was just as helpful as like, helping with whatever else Henry could have needed help with— bringing up the pumpkins or whatever. (Had he done that himself? Neither he nor Gene Horowitz looked like they could have carried them all. Maybe one at a time, but not from Hagrid’s all the way up to Gryffindor Tower.) Next time, Donna decided, she was going to ask if he wanted her help. But only next time. She was here to carve pumpkins— no point in getting responsibility posthumously.

She picked up a knife and spun her wrist around, mostly to show off, and stopped as soon as she spotted Henry looking at her. Probably that wasn’t reassuring him of her responsibility. She made a show of setting it down to select her pumpkin. The really big ones were appealing, she could say that, but she didn’t know about hollowing all of that out by herself. She nudged Kathryn— “Think we could do one of the big ones together? Split the work?”

Merlin’s beard, where would they even put it when they were done? That, she decided, she could figure out in a few hours.

Pixie had seen the notice in the common room – of course she had – but then she'd promptly forgotten all about it until after dinner on friday night. She had no plans for the evening. It was getting dark too early to be allowed to go out into the grounds, not to mention too cold, and sneaking around wasn't quite as much fun as it had been a couple of years ago anyway. A couple of her friends had actually decided to go to the library and study, something about getting their homework done so they could have the weekend free. Pixie didn't like the sound of that one bit. She knew how that was going to turn out – they wouldn't get it all finished, they'd have to work tomorrow or Sunday and they would have wasted a whole friday evening.

So she headed back to the common room on her own, thinking that she might take a quick look at the History of Magic essay if there was nobody interesting to talk to. By which she meant 'if the common room was completely deserted, also devoid of cats, toads and spiders and she immediately got locked in with absolutely no chance of rescue for the next three hours.' Still, good intentions were good intentions, and they lasted until precisely one second after she climbed through the portrait hole.

“Popcorn!' she exclaimed delightedly, bounding across the common room and plunging her hand into the bowl. She was halfway through devouring the handful she'd grabbed when she realised people were talking. Oops, head boy! And Oops, prefect! Was the pumpkin carving just for prefects then? She paused for a moment, then realised she was dropping popcorn onto the floor. “Sorry...” she mumbled, kneeling down and scooping up the bits she hadn't already eaten. From the floor though, it was apparent that she was welcome despite her less than impressive entrance, and now she was ideally placed to pick a pumpkin to carve. "can I do this one?" she asked, looking hopefully in Henry's general direction. Naturally she wanted to choose one of the biggest ones there, but she wasn't sure how that was going to work out.

Because of course Pixie wanted to do things the fun way. Carving out a pumpkin that big with a knife didn't sound fun. But doing it with her wand – now that was the way to spend an evening! First things first – she seized the closest knife and hacked inexpertly around the top of the pumpkin, tried and failed to pull the top off, then had another couple of goes. It was almost there, but she wasn't quite strong enough. Never mind! Raising her wand, she confidently cried “Accio top of my pumpkin!” and was rewarded when the mostly-severed pumpkin 'lid', nearly two feet across, separated itself from the rest of the vegetable with considerable force and smacked her smartly in the face, knocking her backwards onto the common room floor where she sprawled, dazed and struggling to get back to her feet.

They’d had to leave early, to get this all set up. Well— Henry had had to, and Gene, loyally, had assisted. Okay— he’d watched and said mildly crude things. Okay— he’d helped levitate some of the stuff in through the portrait hole, but Gene wasn’t a Prefect and wasn’t Head Boy and didn’t need to do their jobs. Now, of course, Henry was still trying to facilitate his underattended and overstaffed event, and Gene was still slouching at the sidelines eating his food.

Henry was trying so hard at this Head Boy thing, and Gene was finding it almost funny. Just the logistics of getting the pumpkins through the portrait hole had been funny, never mind the eventual disaster that would result from giving a bunch of (Gryffindor!!!) teenagers knives in a few minutes. Right then, though, there didn’t seem to be anybody taking the bait— not even the food Henry had set out, or the fact that if you threw a pumpkin it exploded everywhere. Nobody was here, which would also have been funny if Henry wasn’t his best friend, and was instead offensive and terrible, how dare they all snub him like this.

Just as he was pitying Henry, though, came the first few stragglers. Gryffindor girls.

“Hi!” said Henry, and Gene thought for an amusing second that his poor friend sounded approximately ten years old. Henry must have noticed it too; his next words were considerably butcher, which made Gene feel like a dick for having found it hilarious. He leaned back on the table and took another popcorn ball while Henry was delegating; soon enough he’d be told to leave it for the people actually carving pumpkins, idiot, and he had to get in his snacks while he could.

He gave Henry a look when the girl (he didn’t know her name) (not the Russell one) (Henry would know her name, probably) picked out the big one. Like, a manage the situation, manage the situation, manage the situation look— but Henry was busy helping the Russell cousin and her friends. Gene finished his popcorn and detached himself from the table, anticipating that it would end poorly— which, five seconds later, it did.

Some students were so overconfident. He waited for Henry to manage the situation and, once he had done so and returned to the vicinity of the fireplace, Gene leaned over/down to say quietly, “I’m eating all the popcorn, sorry.” He popped another piece of popcorn ball in his mouth to illustrate, then added with his mouth full, “Could be worse. She could have accidentally stabbed herself.” She still might, frankly— but that wouldn’t make Henry feel very good about his first Head Boy thing.

They'd seen the notice, but they'd sort of forgotten about the whole thing until it was happening. "Maybe I'll pick a tiny one and put in in my dorm, what do you think?" Tomie asked her friends, coming down from the dormitory stairs with a few other first years. The spread before them was quite impressive, and naturally her eyes went to the snacks first. "Lets check it out." Tomie stepped over a girl scooping popcorn off the ground to get to the apple cakes. She and her friend Benny debated about whether or not they should ask before they started carving, but the head boy seemed busy talking to some older students. Swallowing her bite, Tomie moved past him to the pile of knives.

She weighed one in her palm, then flicked her wrist, spinning the knife in figure eights around her hand. One of her brother's friends had done it to show off over the summer, and she'd been so impressed she'd nicked a kitchen knife and kept it in her room to teach herself. Hadn't even lost any digits yet. Tomie twirled it expertly around her fingers, the tip of her tongue poking out of the corner of her lips as she concentrated. "Look," she said, but Benny was appraising pumpkins and not paying her any attention. "Henry, look," she said instead, glancing up quickly to see if he'd noticed her before looking back at the knife in her hand to make sure she didn't slip and cut something.

After a second of this, though, the knife did slip from her fingers, and she jumped back a step to avoid it hitting her. Instead, it just fell to the ground. "Oh, sorry," she said with a goofy laugh, leaning down to pick it up again before flashing Henry a smile. By Tomie's reckoning, they were lucky to have the head boy in their house and not one of the others; she doubted that the Slytherin prefects, for example, had organised anything as fun as this for Halloween. Henry was cool, too. He'd indulged all of her questions when she'd asked him about school stuff and one time she and Benny had gotten lost and he'd walked them all the way to class.

"This is so cool by the way," she told Henry earnestly, jerking the knife in the direction of the pile of pumpkins. She flashed him another grin before bouncing off to join her friends.

After dinner, he had joined a few boys and a girl in a few rounds of exploding snap. He had quite a good winning streak so he kept playing under torchlight, until his fingers were numb and the bell was about to ring for curfew. Carey would not mind trying for another round or two, but the others did not want to push it.

Happily taking away his share of the winnings the young Gryffindor was one of the last to enter the fat lady’s portrait. The Lady who had already chastised him repeatedly for coming in late, this night chose to instead just give him a raised eyebrow.  He ignored it and gave her the password, but she did not allow herself to swing immediately open. “I know, I know, the bells JUST rung. I can’t be more than a minute late.” He said as he waved dismissively at his watch on his wrist.  She just gave a “HUMMFF” and swung the portal open for him. As if the door grew heavier every second after 8pm. Carey was about to give her a smirky reply but was stop sort halfway in, when he saw the common room. Whatever Carey was expecting inside the common room this evening apparently was not a room of pumpkins and checker table cloths. “What the….”

The fat Lady apparently impatient, closed herself on his leg. Carey gave an large “Ouch!” and hopped into the room. “Geeeze, wait until I am in, will ya. It is not like my leg will get a detention for being late." He called to the already closed portal, before turning back around and reassessing the room of pumpkin, popcorn and students wielding knives.

Was there a notice about pumpkin carving? Carey was not sure, he had not looked at the board in ages, but he thought he remembered another Gryffindor saying something about it.  His eyes were almost immediately drawn to the giant pumpkins. They were amazing but... he saw that a few girls had already claimed them. He dropped his bag off near the legs of a table and he was debating about picking a smaller one or asking one of the girls if they needed help. Before he decided just what he was going to do, he heard the sharp clang of metal hitting the floor. Carey eyes immediately followed the sound and turned to find one of the first year picking up a dropped knife.

“Henry, you might think twice about giving first year’s knives! Unless you feel like taking each down in turn to the infirmary.” He teased, before heading over to Pixie. The girl was for some reason, now sprawled on the floor. He offered his left hand to help her up, while his other pulled out his wand iching to get started. “Hey Pixie. Mind if I help? I always wanted to know what it would be like to crawl around inside one of those.”

@Donna Russell expressed skepticism at drawing on her pumpkin. “It works if you have the right ink,” said Henry. “My dad would get the permanent stuff, I’ve got some over here.” He darted back to one of the tables to fetch his bottle, pausing to let @Pixie Clarke-Trickett know she was absolutely free to work on the pumpkin she’d chosen before calling back to Donna. “Oh—and also you can’t press too hard with your quill or you’ll break the skin—or the quill.” He looked up and caught the prefect spinning one of the knives he’d laid out, and barely stopped himself cursing in surprise. She saw him gaping at her, though, and sheepishly set it down to browse the pumpkin selection with her friend. Henry scoffed to himself. Honestly.

Behind him he heard Pixie summon the top of her pumpkin, and turned just in time to see it flatten her. This time he was unable to rein in his language. “Oh, shite, let me see—“ She seemed alright by the time he could get across the now-crowded corner of the Common Room. “Do you need to go up to the Hospital Wing, or do you think you’re okay?” he asked, dropping to his knees to help her sit up. Another little voice called his name as he was standing up himself, and Henry turned yet another direction to see new first year @Tomie Vos  twirling her knife even more quickly and intricately than Donna had been. “Oh, wow,” he gasped, “please don’t—“ and then she flung her knife point down into the Common Room carpet.

Thankfully she was quick enough to hop out of the way, but Henry wasn’t any less shaken as she cheerfully picked it up and giggled. @Carey Baisley’s comment did not help him feel any better. It took Henry several seconds to be able to form words, his heart rattling wildly around in his chest. “Oh, come on, all of you eat, don’t you?” he replied, forcing a laugh to cover his discomfort. “You use knives in potions to chop your ingredients, right? It’s no more dangerous than that, so long as you’re smart about it.” As he spoke he recalled having to pause his Potions O.W.L. for first aid after slicing the tip of his finger along with his ginger root, and hoped nobody listening was old enough to have heard about that. But well—that’s what Madam Pomfrey was here for. Henry had even been perfecting his basic healing spells to fix up any minor cuts himself.

He retreated back to pick out a pumpkin for himself. @Gene Horowitz was giving him a skeptical look from the snack table. “Shut up,” Henry mumbled back. He was almost angry at them all then. Kids carved pumpkins all the time, didn’t they? With their parents or whoever? Why was it too much to ask that a bunch of teenagers have any basic bloody safety skills?? Now it was going to be his fault if some idiot juggled a carving knife into someone else’s eye.

Obviously he couldn’t call anything to a halt now, now that people were here. He had that problem with most things he tried to do. After about two days he’d realized how stupid it was to write every student a birthday card, but the kids from those two days had already got them, so he was shackled to that idiot plan for the rest of the year. And now he’d gotten everybody’s attention with all his dumb pumpkins, so he had to follow through even if it had been a foolish idea in the first place.

“You can just scoop all the insides onto the floor,” he said hurriedly to no one in particular, lifting his medium-sized pumpkin on a table so he could still be seen. “I can clean up, don’t worry about it. You can use these big ol’ spoons over here.” He’d wanted to find a spell that could clear out a pumpkin, but most of the ones he could find would take a lot of precision for so small a target. At least he’d been wary of overconfident kids taking a chunk out of the floor. At least he’d been wary of something, hadn’t he? He sucked in a deep breath and tried to calm down. It felt like he spent all his time being wary of everything, but still he managed to be an idiot.

Her nose hurt. Her nose, and her forehead, and the back of her head, and there were two left hands reaching down to help her up. Pixie stared at them both, and they cleverly morphed into just one hand, which she reached for and grabbed on her second attempt. "Thanks..." she mumbled a little vaguely, as she realised the hand belonged to @Carey Baisley , though she couldn't quite figure out how to get up from her prone position. Then @Henry Murphy arrived and asked if she needed the hospital wing, and that was enough to make Pixie remember how get upright, Her head swam and she swayed a little after she'd let go of Carey's hand, but she struggled back to her knees and sat back, blinking a bit too fast. "Yeah...I mean no, I'm fine..." she said, sounding neither convinced nor convincing as she put a hand to her nose to make sure it was still in the right place. It hurt, but not enough that she wanted to miss the fun. Hadn't someone said something about climbing inside the pumpkin?

That had been her idea! There was no way anyone else was going to do it first, even if her head was a bit swimmy. Besides, she'd already done the most difficult part and cut the top off the massive pumpkin. Done quite a good job, too, she decided, as she looked down at the huge lid that now lay on the floor near to where she had fallen. Carefully - because if she moved too quickly she went dizzy and Pixie really didn't want to fall over again and get sent to the hospital wing - she looked round and spotted firstly her wand, and then the knife which she'd put down once she'd finished cutting the pumpkin lid off. When she leaned over for her wand she went a little too far and the ground started swimming again, but she grabbed it and got herself sitting upright again.

Only a few seconds had passed, but it wasn't until now that Pixie remembered she hadn't actually answered Carey's question. "Sure you can help! What spell are we going to use to scoop out the insides?" she asked, sounding almost like herself and completely oblivious to Henry's offer to use spoons. Instead, rather rashly she picked up the knife and started poking around at the top of the pumpkin where she'd removed the lid. "Wait! What if we carve out the pattern first? Then we can climb through the eye holes or whatever and pretend its a tunnel, and we're miners!" she exclaimed excitedly, overlooking the fact that the pumpkin, while huge by any standards, wasn't really large enough to have two teenagers create an ill-advised 3D maze inside it. Still holding her knife, eyes slightly unfocused and with a manic grin on her face, Pixie at that moment looked more like a Hallowe'en nightmare than anything the Gryffindors were likely to carve this evening.

She was like, concussed, right? Donna was no stranger to head injury— Quidditch, football, her brothers doing stupid things in the backyard when there wasn’t anything to do— and that, absolutely, was the look of someone who was not in tip-top shape.

Henry, owing to his being in charge, had been distracted by one of the first years dropping a knife and then by Gene Horowitz making a face and then by giving instructions; too obviously he had too much on his plate to pay close attention to @Pixie Clarke-Trickett and so, of course, it was a good thing Donna was here, peering unsubtly around Kathryn at the younger girl, trying to gauge from a distance whether her pupils were dilated or whatever it was that signaled a concussion.

It didn’t matter, really, she decided, what level of concussed she was, as Pixie picked up her knife again; with a quiet “Bup bup bup bup bup,” Donna stabbed her knife into the top of her pumpkin (for safekeeping) and circumvented the area, reaching out to grab Pixie’s arm in case she was still unsteady.

“You’re sure you’re alright?” she said, trying hard to sound responsible and Prefectly and, you know, like somebody one ought to be listening to, had one just knocked oneself flat with a pumpkin top. “You look sort of…”

Donna wasn’t totally tactless, and thought it wouldn’t do to tell a teenage girl that she looked utterly unhinged, so she settled for “You took a bad fall, there. I’d be happy to walk you down to the hospital wing— or,” and here she reached one hand carefully to take the knife— “maybe you should just, not have a knife, ‘til we’re certain you’re okay.”

The wizard-boy had mistakenly thought it was a little funny when his fellow third year couldn’t grab his hand, well at least not on the first try. Once she had it, Carey gently pulled to help her up, but to no avail. The girl would not sit up right. It was then Carey speared a concerned look at Hennery’s direction. Thankfully the Head boy said the obvious. Although the third-year wizard had always admired his year mate’s spunk, but he could tell that she was not fine as she so claimed.

Even on her knees she seemed a little shaken. Additionally, Carey watched her blink profusely, test her nose, and look around slowly. It soon occurred to Carey that she was looking for her wand, so he joined in the search, but somehow the dizzy brunette found her own wand first. Carey thought the girl’s few seconds delay was her seriously considering the hospital wing, but after a period of in activity it seems like she woke up, and answered Carey’s question.

“Oh, uh……..”Carey stammered still concerned for the girl who is likely seeing stars.

Thankfully his Quidditch mate intervened and grabbed the knife. The prefect was pushing for her to go to the hospital wing too, but Carey knew what it was like to be stuck in a bed, when others were having fun. So he decided to fight for Pixie to stay.

“Come on guys, she just knocked herself senseless.” He gave Pixie a conspiratorial wink, before turning to Donna, “You know we been hit way worst by a bludger and still played. And all that Madam Puffery would do is giver her some willow bark concoction and fuss over her all night while she lay compley board in a hospital bed.”

"How about um... How about I help her start drawing the pattern and she could sit until she feels good enough to help. I’ll do the cutting and get you in there to scoop!” He said the last part the his co conspirator hoping she get the hint he is trying to work it so she could stay. Then turned to the worried prefect and head boy. “If she complains of headache one of us will see that she walked down there for that willow bark stuff. Okay?”

Hoping to start before the upperclassman, have a chance to mull it over and disagree he turns to his year mate and said while handing her a marker. “Okay Pixie, I will start by drawing the eyes, and after you sit for a second you could draw the mouth. Then I'll cut them out and get you in there for scooping. Sound good? So, What type of eyes you want evil or scared?”

The massive pumpkin was unsportingly shimmering in front of her, trying to turn into two pumpkins and then back into a single one. This was confusing, and Pixie wasn't entirely sure which of them she should try to stab the knife into. They shimmered again, and started to morph back into a single shape, and she held out the knife purposefully, when she felt a hand on her arm. "Whmpff?" she asked succinctly, turning her head rather too fast to look at the intruder and swaying a little as she did so. Oh. Prefect. Pixie frowned, then didn't frown because it made her eyebrows hurt, and was about to say that she was fine when @Donna Russell said they could take her to the hospital wing.

What? Why was everyone talking about the hospital wing all of a sudden? It wasn't as if she'd really been hurt, just fallen over a bit, and if these pumpkins and people would make up their minds whether they wanted to be one or two things she'd be absolutely fine. But because she really, really didn't want to have to miss all the fun, the third year humbly surrendered the knife and then managed a grin in Carey's direction. He was definitely on her side. Both of him! "Yeah, I feel fine now" she said, extracting her arm from Donna's grasp and sitting down next to the pumpkin to show that she was being sensible and doing as she was told. She reached up and touched her nose again, which was still feeling very bruised, and wondered for a brief second if a lie down somewhere quiet and dark would actually be a nice idea. Then the very small sensible part of her shut up and she realised Carey was talking to her again.

"Scary eyes. Definitely scary" she said from her vantage point on the floor, looking up and trying hard to convince her eyes that they wanted to focus. If she was going to draw the mouth she needed a quill...or a...there. There was a pen on the floor, not far away. Too far to walk, it seemed, so Pixie carefully crawled towards it, grabbed hold of it on her second attempt (stupid thing seemed to move away from her hand) and brought it back triumphantly. Mouth...mouth... Holding the pen firmly she started drawing an impressive tooth-filled maw onto the pumpkin, the only fault being that it was entirely off to one side from the eyes that Carey was already carving.

"Ne' mind. It'll move in minute like th'other one" she mumbled, staring unsteadily at the frankly terrible drawing before pulling herself to her feet using the pumpkin as leverage. "Havyougota spoooonnn?" she slurred loudly, leaning heavily on the giant plant. Her head was swimming, and she really did feel like a lie down now. Suddenly that seemed even more fun than crawling around inside the pumpkin. "I thinkk maybe I should go..." Pixie meant to finish with "to the hospital wing after all" but it was taking all her concentration just to remain standing.

[OOC: aaand that'll be Pixie leaving this thread very soon!]

“See I told you she feels fine!” Carey said as he stood in a superman pose, while being quite pleased with himself. He took charged, came up with a solution and everything is turning up Jack o lanterns. Carey gave a smile and a upwards nod to his fifth-year teammate, that said ‘I totally got this’ .  Before turning to Pixie as she instructed that she wanted ‘scary eyes.’ She was still a little crossed eye, but he was sure she will come around, soon. I mean she can’t possibly get worst just sitting there. That is like incredibly impossible , right? Right!

“Scarey, you got it Pixie!” he said encouragingly. He gave Donna a thumbs up before turning to the Giant pumpkin in front of him… Oh, Okay… just how high should I make the the eyes? He decided the maximum height he could reach seemed the perfect height. He found the perfect spots for two half moons which looked a little bit like cradles until he added a round circle at the bottom.  He quickly switched over to carving, so engrossed in his work he forgot to check on Pixie.

“Nice.” Carey said to himself as he stepped back, to allow himself a better view of his work. It was then he caught sight of the brunette on the floor drawing a very zig zaggy looking line at the base of the pumpkin, just left. Was that a mouth? Man, she is NOT good at this. Thank goodness she had me here to help her, or who knows just how bad her pumpkin could have turned out. It would have been a shame really... It was then he noticed, something seemed off with Pixie she definitely was not her smiley playful self.

“Hey, Pixie you feeling better?” He said hopeful.

Shoot, she did not look better…. Then she talked…at least he thought she said something about ‘move in minute’ but the rest was so muddled. Shoot. She did not sound better too. And then she tried to stand Shoot, shoot shoot.  “Shoot, Pixie are you okay?”

It was a stupid question. For even Carey could tell she was not in the least bit, or anywhere close to being okay. He did not understand it. People get better not worse. That is the rule. But she was not one to following any rules.  Shoot. Carey hoved over her when another random set of syllables passed the third years lips.  “Spoon?” it was he only word he caught. “Yes, we have one somewhere, but no Pixie… come on Pixie snap out of it."  He said that last bit in a whisper plee.

Maybe it was a joke or a prank. For all that Carey knew it was just one of Pixie’s game she like to play. ANY minute now she was going to look up at him and go ‘fooled you!’ Give one of her big smiles, turn away from him, and bounce with her endless energy as she looked for her knife again… And moment now, any moment now…

“I think maybe I should go..."

“Donna, Donna, DONNA!” Calling for his teammate was the only thing that Carey could think of doing. “Donna, I think she needs to go. To the hospital wing. Like now.”

When in the— when had Carey been hurt this badly and kept playing Quidditch?!? Donna scowled with disbelief, but she was a recent addition to the main team, and couldn’t say she knew any better, so she folded her arms. The right thing to do, now that her suggestion had been shut down, was to go back to the pumpkin, which still had her knife sticking like a horn out of its top, but no. She was going to make sure things were okay. That seemed like the responsible Prefect thing to do.

As Pixie’s words started getting more and more slurred, Donna was already moving back toward her and Carey— what was he thinking?? The kid had needed to crawl to pick up one of Henry’s little drawing contraptions— and by the time he’d conceded that she’d been right, she was at his shoulder already.

“What’d I tell you!” she said.

He looked really worried, and for a moment she thought the best thing to do was to ask him for help getting Pixie down several flights of stairs— that’d make him feel better, probably— but she tilted her head to one side to regard him. He was about three inches shorter and she-didn’t-even-want-to-think-about-how-much lighter, so she said, quickly, “Pixie, you mind?” before ducking under one of the other girl’s arms. (Pixie was tiny!?)

“Don’t reckon we should try carrying you,” she said to Pixie. “Can you walk? Carey— you can come too, ‘fyou want. If we need help.”

Also important, though, was that they notify @Henry Murphy before they left. “I think she’s concussed herself,” she said. stopping by on her way out, stooped awkwardly so Pixie could still stand on both feet. “So me and Carey are taking her downstairs to see Pomfrey.”

Gene Horowitz looked like he wanted to say something to Carey, so she kept talking as he opened his mouth— “She’s talking a bit weird and I think her eyes look dilated. That’s one of the things my mum checks when my brothers hit their heads. Okay, see you later!”

Everything felt weird, and Pixie couldn't quite work out why. The pumpkin - which still seemed to be shimmering in and out of focus and unable to decide whether it was one or two vegetables - seemed to her to be the main cause, but beyond that her reasoning stopped. It occurred to her that talking nicely to the pumpkin might help, but the words didn't seem to want to form, and now Carey was talking to her in a voice that sounded...scared.

Why was he scared? Why was he calling Donna? Did he think they weren't going to manage to carve the pumpkin themselves? (which might well be true if it wasn't going to stop moving around like that) If only her head would stop pounding then she'd be able to remember how to talk and could reassure him that they didn't need a prefect to help them. And then Donna was there, and Pixie remembered the hospital wing, and that did seem like a pretty good idea right now though she couldn't quite remember how to get there. Down the stairs...no, wait, you had to go through the portrait hole first, and then... Thinking was too much effort and the pounding in her head was starting to make her feel sick.

So it was good that she didn't have to think, she just had to agree to whatever they were planning to do, which seemed to be helping her to walk (also good, because her feet didn't seem to remember how to work on their own just now), and going out of the common room and walking for what seemed like a very, very long time before she was lying on a bed and the light was far too bright, and there were voices and she was being told to look this way and that and answer stupid questions like which day it was (Hallowe'en?) and where she was (Hogwarts, obviously) but at least now she could stop walking and even the words that she was going to have to stay in the hospital wing overnight seemed hopeful, because it meant she didn't have to try and walk anywhere else.

"Ne'er did find a spoon..." she mumbled after her friends had left. Oh, well. There was always next year.

Guilt flooded the young Gryffindor when Donna’s words of ‘what’d I tell you' rang out.

“I uh, I um thought...” Stammered the third year Gryffindor running his hand through his top mop of hair before he bit his lip then he couldn’t think of anything else to say or do.  Yet thankfully Donna had already swooped in. Getting the girl under her arm and had her standing.

He was a bit confused, then a little worried when Donna looked him over. He thought she was trying to decide where to tear him a new one. Which he already like the one he had so, um no thank you I'll pass.  He did not take it personally,  Donna was like that… tough as nails at times. Sometimes you forget she is a girl.

Really it was not his fault! All he wanted to do was to give Pixie a chance to get better on her own. He knew what it was like to spend almost every holiday and major event in bed while other kids his age, even his own sisters would be out there enjoying everything from fireworks to carolling. It was not fare. The only problem was that he was contagious when his condition flared up so it was a necessity, to keep him in bed and away from other kids. Even if he was feeling better. Yet with Pixie, she had just fell. Carey was sure that falling was not contagious and that she would recover, but now he realized just how bad being mistaken feels like.

Luckley at this moment, Donna had to deal with Pixie, which was his saving grace. So instead of tearing him in half, she was acting all civil although a little demanding and in charge. Which was fine for Carey. For once he did not want to be in charge at this moment at all. When she expressed that they should carry her, Carey nodded like a bobble head. Pixie was practically melting a second ago so it made total sense. “Yah, ya I’ll help!” Carey said guilty.

The third year put Pixie’s other arm over his. They started for the door. Donna had the good sense to talk to the two seventh years on the way out. He admired how a matter of fact she was with them. Gene Horowitz in particular, looked like he had something to say. Yet The wizard-boy was more then happy that Donna had made its sound all urgent that they leave now (which it was) and steer them towards the portal door.

At least the girl was attempting to walk. They had to tilt her and almost lift her through the Fat Lady-portrait whole. Carey just hoped between the two of them they will manage her down all the stairs to the infirmary wing, without falling.
