Name: Laura
Character name: Bérénice Bonaccord
Feature you are applying for: Hypnotist

c h a r a c t e r

Bérénice is intelligent and focused, with a very patient and dedicated demeanour. She is reliable, meticulous and careful. She dislikes being rushed and likes to ensure things are done to the highest standard, often going beyond what is required. Because of this, however, she has a tendency to overload herself. Bérénice has a strong sense of duty and is a perfectionist. She has an aversion to conflict, which often results in her being overloaded by others, struggling silently to meet expectations. She is much more tolerant of others than she is of herself.

She is a hardworking, studious individual. Bérénice is responsible and disciplined. She places a high value on her reputation -- well, her family's. Social status and influence are important. Bérénice is vulnerable to criticism; generally she retreats inwards, blaming herself for her "inadequacies". She wants to prove herself and is determined to do well, both in her own eyes and those of her parents. Her ambitious streak and strong willpower come in handy here, and she can be very resourceful when she wants to be.

Nice was raised in a traditional, conservative family. Her morals and views, therefore, are rather old-fashioned. She believes in order and authority, and is not rebellious by nature -- she won't blindly go along with something just because her friends or family tell her to, but she won't be disobedient just for the sake of it. She isn't completely inflexible, but is cautious and dislikes taking unnecessary risks.

Bérénice is naturally confident, though is susceptible to a fluctuating self-esteem. She is charismatic and kind, and likes inspiring people to achieve their goals. Her cool, calm demeanour allows her to be gently persuasive. She is authentic and eloquent, warm and sensitive. She cares deeply about other people and their feelings, and seeks win-win situations wherever she can. She is good at connecting with people because her interest is genuine. Bérénice is supportive of others; she will happily share her knowledge, experience, time and energy with anyone who needs it, but especially with those she holds dear. She is loyal and trustworthy.

Hypnosis is described as "a trancelike state, artificially induced, in which a person has a heightened suggestibility, and in which suppressed memories may be experienced". The word Hypnosis comes from the Greek for "sleep", however there is debate over whether the subject is truly unconscious of their actions or if they are in a wakeful state of hyper-suggestion -- that they are simply far more susceptible to the suggestions of the Hypnotist. Hypnotism is used in both the muggle and magical world; in the muggle world, hypnotism is used in both Hypnotherapy and Stage Hypnotism.

Hypnotherapy is a type of suggestion that is often used to modify a subject's behaviour, emotions, and attitudes, as well as a wide range of conditions including dysfunctional habits, anxiety, stress-related illness, pain management, and personal development. It is not a cure for illness or disease, but can help manage the pain endured from such afflictions.

Stage Hypnosis is far better known, but also more dangerous. Stage Hypnotists are not qualified medical professionals, and their only aim is to entertain their audience. Also, many are simply faking their performance, so it is difficult to tell if they are truly using hypnotism in their act. Looking at a Stage Hypnotist and a Hypnotherapist side-by-side would offer glaring contrasts; a Stage Hypnotist attempts to (or at least gives the illusion of being able to) 'control' their subject, often offering amusement to the audience at their subject's expense, but a trained Hypnotherapist gives the control to the subject, allowing them to access their inner resources. A Hypnotherapist is a Therapist who uses Hypnosis as a primary tool in assisting clients meet their goals, and a Hypnotherapist differs from other therapists in that they focus on the subconscious behaviours and influences of their clients.

In addition to sending subjects into a Deep Sleep, Hypnotists may also Suggest things to the client, ranging from modifying a memory to changing lifelong habits and more. Bérénice would be proficient in all aspects of Hypnosis, but would most commonly use: Deep Sleep, Dream Production, and The Great and Small Pendulums. I envision Deep Sleep and Dream Production would be somewhat like Inception (for those of you who have seen the movie), planting a suggestion within a dream for it to seem as natural as possible; the client (or subject) would never even know they hadn't thought of it themselves. Suggestion (whilst the subject is awake) is a greyer area: Bérénice would be able to subtly encourage people into doing things she wants them to. A number of factors would influence the success of this particular area of hypnosis: eye contact, a soft, soothing tone, and a susceptible victim -- strong-willed or suspicious individuals would be almost impossible to Suggest to without the help of her wand or other tools.

Hypnotists in the muggle world can perform their 'spells' without need of a wand, however a magical Hypnotist's power lies in their wand. Without her wand or tools, Bérénice's ability is greatly diminished. The Hypnotist can utilise tools such as the small and great pendulums, or a musical instrument. The most important thing in the hypnotism of a person is their susceptibility to hypnosis. In the muggle world this is vital, however with the introduction of a wand, a witch or wizard finds this less of an obstacle, though still an important factor.

The main limitations for Bérénice would be the draining effect on her fatigue by performing hypnotic spells (where repetitive casting of spells increases the likelihood of exhaustion), the willingness and/or character of her patients or subjects, and the availability of her tools. People who are more easily manipulated in everyday life are more likely to fall under Hypnosis easily, and those who are more stubborn, or questioning, will be harder for Bérénice to put under, and almost impossible without the use of one or more of her tools.

s u i t a b i l i t y

Bérénice is a people-orientated person and enjoys being sociable. She is an emphatic and perceptive being, with a gentle and kind disposition -- despite small moments of ambition and pride. Bérénice is largely a serene woman, only becoming emotional when pushed to her limits, however this is not to say that she isn't passionate in what she believes in. With all these traits taken into consideration, I believe that as far as character alignment goes, Bérénice is well-suited to be a Hypnotist.

Bérénice would have learnt Hypnosis at Beauxbatons, furthering her study at L'Académie Guérison Adrienne d'Heur, the French Healing School that specialises in Psychological and Psychiatric Care, including Hypnotherapy. As a Hypnotherapist, much of her training and usage of hypnosis has been in treatment of clients. Although there is no classification of experience I would suggest Bérénice be fairly adept at her skill; having taken deep interest in the subject since beginning Hypnosis classes during her time at Beauxbatons, she would have over twenty years of experience, though admittedly the first decade would have been largely looking at hypnosis from a theoretical and academic approach rather than using it on other people.

There would have been periods in her history where Bérénice used Hypnosis to her own advantage, but these instances would have been few and far between. She would not be above using Hypnosis to help a friend or loved one if she felt strongly enough about the cause. She has, as an adult, realised that her actions have consequences and that people shouldn't always be able to get what they want. It is quite likely that she uses it almost unintentionally in some cases, shrugging it off as simply being charming or charismatic -- a free drink, a seat on a crowded train.

f u t u r e

My plan is to apply for the Hypnosis position at Beauxbatons (which I have discussed with Sioban), but I created this character with a full backstory just in case that doesn't get approved -- hence her established career as a Hypnotherapist at L'Hôpital des Maladies Magiques Bonaccord. Should she not be approved for the Hypnosis Professor position I would play her as a Healer. As a Healer, Bérénice would be based in the Paris hospital, but could take secondment opportunities elsewhere. Any plots involving her skills as a Hypnotist will require me getting permission from other drivers, which I am happy to do. I have already established connections and/or future thread opportunities with the following, and there is some more detail in Bérénice's sheet.

Sebastien Proulx: Bérénice had a crush on Sebastien in school, and in their sixth year he began dating another girl. In her jealousy Bérénice used her skill to hypnotise Sebastien's girlfriend (an npc) into breaking up with him. He later realised what Bérénice had done, and was understandably mad at her. They patched things up after she became a qualified Healer, but he is still wary of her using her Hypnosis in a non-altruistic manner.

Sylvester Walker: Upon discovering some of Sylvester's less pleasant opinions and traits, Bérénice tries to Suggest to him and make him (in her eyes) a better person. He realises what she is trying to do and is unhappy with her at first but finds a benefit in her skill, later enlisting her help with several of his Quidditch team players.

Healers Ben Fletcher, John Lennox and Varvara Zakharova: Though I am sure I will be able to connect Bérénice to many more healers, she would have had working relationships from her stint at St Mungo's with Ben and John, and a professional friendship with Varya. Additionally, Darla Boyd will be interested in Hypnotherapy and how it can help children with nightmares.

John Lennox: Bérénice met John when she did her secondment at St Mungo's, and after his divorce John sought out Nice in France both for her good reputation as a therapist and because she was no longer a fellow colleague. Being attracted to John, Bérénice would have been faced with a similar situation as she'd already experienced in school with Sebastien. This time, however, with her career at stake, and with her respect for John, Nice would have performed only the hypnosis that John requested. Moving forward there would always be the delicate line to tread between friend, colleague, and patient.

Donatella Bertinelli: will become more interested in Hypnosis class under Bérénice's teaching. Upon seeing the Bellefeuille's early skill, Bérénice will agree to tutor Donatella outside of standard classes. Over time, however, she will realise Nata isn't going to use Hypnosis for good, so Bérénice will (try to) stop their lessons.

Some smaller connections include Sioban's WIP Clio Bonneville: Clio has a unique ability that makes it difficult for her to integrate into society normally, and Bérénice may inadvertently start treating Clio like a patient rather than a friend; Christèle Deveaux and Tristan Deveaux who will be Bérénice's cousins through her maternal line; and Lena has also offered a potential future plot with Viktor Krum but has asked me not to reveal it due to spoilers.

s a m p l e

Soporis.

Bérénice's cool fingers stroked from his temple down the side of his face softly, her wand still held delicately aloft in her other hand from casting the non-verbal incantation. The worry lines in his brow had smoothed out, the strong bite of his jaw had softened; all of his features relaxed under the magical sleep. Everyone always looked so peaceful in this slumber -- it didn't matter what their troubles were when they were awake, everything melted away when they were put under. It was hard not to want to leave some people like this: they were in less pain this way. She could help them relive their favourite memories, or dream up new ones. Everything was possible in sleep -- but dreams were not living.

This particular man had seen unimaginable horrors. Bérénice wasn't a legillimens, she hadn't seen what was there in his head, but he'd told her. Described in detail what was tearing his mind and soul asunder. She couldn't really understand the pain he was suffering through, but she could empathise. He was an ex-Auror, and in his retirement he was haunted by what he'd done, and had been done to him, over his lengthy career. He couldn't sleep peacefully, and couldn't function awake without taking potions or other substances to get him through the day.

The Hypnotist wouldn't remove his memories, or change what he'd done -- but she could quiet his mind. Bring him comfort and let him accept the past, so that he could move on with the future.

Wordlessly, she waved her wand over him. Somnio. As she cast the spell, her soft, dark eyes focused on his serenely sleeping face. Bérénice wiped her mind clean of anything but the thought that was to be implanted. The depth at which this suggestion needed to be sown into the seams of his subconscious was somewhere in the deeper layers of Dream. It wasn't a simple bad habit to kick, like smoking, which could be weaved in somewhere near the surface and still work. No, this was trauma, and it damaged the soul. To accept ones actions, or indeed inaction, especially when they resulted in harm to other beings, was not easy -- even if you had just been following orders.

A gentle flick and tight whirl of her wand, and it was done. The brunette let him rest for a further few moments as she steadied her breathing, recovering from the physical toll of planting a suggestion deep in someone's mind. Gently, Bérénice pressed her palm to his shoulder, urging him awake with another unspoken incantation before stepping away to her desk to fill in her notes and let her patient come around without her leering over him. With a soft smile, clipboard and quill in hand, she sat in her chair and faced him. "How do you feel?"

Name: Mel
Character Name: @Montserrat Fábregas
Feature you are applying for: Consensimency

One of the most appealing aspects of this special feature is that there are no particular character traits that make this feature plausible. Rather, it is through the way the character faces the challenges imposed by this feature that the character’s persona is born. Many of my characters on MH have tragic pasts, I believe that challenges are necessary to really give my characters a voice and make each of them unique. When Montserrat appeared in my head several years ago, she was different than any of my other characters in that her challenges had not affected her negatively but rather had inspired her to continue to be charitable, attentive, and most importantly, sacrificial. I shied away from applying for a special feature at the time because I was still learning my way around MH and could not justify my reasons for any one of those features.

Montserrat went through a general edit when I returned from an extended hiatus to MH. At the time, my muse for her was not as strong as when I first created her—there seemed to be something missing this time around that made playing her a challenge for me. Nevertheless, I enjoyed her uncomplicated backstory and she helped me get back into the groove of roleplaying. The second edit, however, is a major one. As may be evident in my more recent characters compared to my earlier ones, I have spent a significant amount of time focusing on a character’s history first then their personality, something that I never thought to do before. This has created natural relationships between a character’s actions and their motivations, most of which are greatly affected by three main stages in their life: their childhood, their romantic relationships, and their professional aspirations.

As I re-read Montserrat’s sheet, there seemed to be a disconnect between the challenges she had faced in the past and the person she was currently, and that made her seem very different to who she was. While she has lived in my head for several years, it was this time around that her identity became clearer and as I prepared to update her sheet, I started conceptualizing who she was and how to make that much clearer through her personality, personal interests, and most importantly, her history. Even as I slowly worked my way through her sheet, taking notes and making adjustments, there seemed to be something important missing, something more than a few childhood tragedies could truly demonstrate. When I came across consensimency in the special features guide, everything suddenly started falling into place.

Considering that as this is a special feature that relies heavily on a mutual agreement between drivers for actions experienced during a thread, I believe that not only will this encourage me to continue to develop more plot-driven threads but it will also help me become a more responsible driver. If approved, I am committing to using this special feature responsibly and realistically.

-----

Montserrat is an idealist whose primary mode of living is internal, and therefore spends much of her time thinking of how she can be of service to the world around her. Raised in a household where altruism is a way of life rather than an option, she has a tendency to make the needs of others  a priority rather than her own. Because of this, however, Montserrat does not always make her needs known, which can cause her a significant amount of personal dissatisfaction. Nevertheless, she distracts herself by dreaming of the possibilities —believing that the effect that her good deeds  have on others will bring her absolute happiness. Guided by a set of values and beliefs that were instilled in her since childhood, Montserrat can sometimes have unrealistic expectations  of herself and others, particularly when the topic of justice  and social responsibility  are concerned. She believes that the happiness of others should be everyone’s priority and therefore struggles with understanding that it is alright to want something that will benefit her above everyone else. As she becomes older and spends more time developing her romantic and social interactions, she has started to feel an overwhelming sense of guilt, believing that her time is better spent on charitable works rather than her personal desires.

Montserrat is accepting and nonjudgmental  believing that everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt, and a second, or third chance, should they need it. She believes that people are inherently good and that those who have been lead astray have done so because of a traumatic past or challenge they were unable to overcome. She spends most of her time seeking the good in others and highlighting it, even if there is no real good to be found. While she does not agree with all beliefs, she is quite tolerant of those whose personal values are completely opposite of her own, preferring a gentle approach to changing their mind rather than an argument. Montserrat is not an argumentative person and therefore avoids confrontation  whenever possible—going as far as to simply accept someone else’s version of events simply for the sake of avoiding a fight. She believes that being flexible and accomodating others  is a part of being a responsible adult and is a believer in compromise . Considering that Montserrat struggled to make friends a young girl, her loyalty  and devotion to others makes it easy to manipulate her. She naively believes that no one would purposefully harm another person without probable cause and therefore tends to think that she is at fault is someone else wrongs her. Montserrat reflects  on her interactions with others often, and considers the best way to handle every challenge, even if it means waiting several weeks or months until her own feelings about the issue are not a primary factor in her reaction.

She is naturally social and enjoys making friends, learning about new languages and cultures, and takes special interest in alternative lifestyles or uncommon points of view. She has a special affection for the arts and enjoys experiencing new ways of self-expression, even if she is not particularly talented in it. Nevertheless, her fear of skin to skin contact made her isolated as a young girl, afraid of others but also longing to interact with them. As she became more comfortable with her ability, something that continues to be an everyday challenge, Montserrat became more open to social interaction as long as it was at her own terms and done at a comfortable distance. However, she still shies away from large crowds. Because of her ability, Montserrat tends to admire people the same way an art enthusiast might admire art—from a distance but with attention to the fine details, looking for meaning in their actions, no matter how mundane. She longs to understand others and overcome her fears in order to participate more actively in society. Until that day, she intends to touch the heart of others through her actions and her dedication to service.

Birth to Discovery: Birth – 1992
Montserrat’s parents believed that something was wrong with their little girl from the moment they held her in their arms. She cried incessantly; twisting away from gentle caresses to her face and only finding comfortable sleep wrapped in her blankets, left in peace in her crib. The baby could not stand being touched, much less breastfeed, and though the concerned parents sought the advice of several Healers in their city, results were inconclusive. Many times, they were simply sent home with what was described as a “fussy baby” and promised that she would eventually grow out of that stage. Things simply became increasingly worse. Although her parents tried to make her environment as touch free as possible, they did not know what was causing her reactions but figured the best approach was to avoid causing it, there was only so much help a wand and thicker clothing could provide. As she grew, Montserrat became increasingly isolated, her sensitivity and the extreme pain she suffered when touched by others made her wary of people in general.

As a child, Montserrat became curious of social interactions and longed to make friends. She would oftentimes test her own limits, engaging in play that would inevitably end in some sort of skin to skin contact and a world of pain for the young girl. She could only tolerate it so much before she essentially gave up, withdrawing and living her life as a member of the audience rather than an active participant. When not hiding in her parent’s library, Montserrat watched the children of her neighborhood play from her window sill, her overactive imagination creating circumstances where those very children would play major roles in her daydreams, ones in which she could play with them to her heart’s delight. While her parents accepted her way of life, believing that forcing her to go outside or to continue trying would only make the situation worse, her older brother believed her “condition” to be a plea for attention. He would oftentimes tease her, prodding her and poking her in order to laugh at her reaction, and it was during one of these times that Montserrat demonstrated her first sign of magic, violently reacting to his bullying by sending him flying into a bookcase.

Her first year at Beauxbatons was a challenge for the young girl who had, for the majority of her young life, actively spent away from others. Even though she dreaded the idea of being in close quarters with so many others, Montserrat looked forward to a chance of scenery, and somehow believed that once she arrived, everything would change. While many changes did occur, the pain she experienced through touch only became increasingly worse. It would always start the same, the sort of numbness that one would experience when their leg fell asleep, that would worsen significantly in a few seconds, enough of a warning for the young witch to pull back in pain. Montserrat’s ability is not discovered until after halfway through her first year, after a friend’s sudden touch landed her unconscious at the nurse’s office. It is then that she is finally given an answer to a question she had been asking herself for years, she was a consensimens. It is from this point that Montserrat begins her training under the tutelage of her Medical Studies Professor.

     Defensive Training: 1992-1996
Montserrat began her training soon after her ability was discovered, assigned a mentor, the Professor of Medical Studies, a class which would later also become her favorite. In the beginning the young girl was skeptical, how could someone that had never experienced her ability even know how to help her overcome it? Nevertheless, Montserrat was respectful and attentive, raised in a household where respect to authority figures was enforced, she kept her curious thoughts to herself. The first step, and most difficult in her opinion, was the ability to mentally block the sensation of touch. The goal was simple: to gain the ability to touch someone else, but with someone of Montserrat’s ability, it seemed a hurdle that the young witch would never overcome. Montserrat initially met with her mentor a couple of times a week in order to develop a relationship with her mentor. Before she would be able to undergo training, it was imperative that she put full trust in her professor’s ability to guide her.

Over time, Montserrat developed a close relationship with her mentor, speaking to her about anything that troubled her—apart from her parents and brothers, her Medical Studies Professor was the only one aware of her ability, or at least she believed that to be the case. Growing to trust her mentor was easy, training her mind to not only block the overwhelming sensations caused by touch but the fear she had always associated with it, took years of practice. It was not as if things continuously moved forward, the summer prior to her third year an experience at a Quidditch game caused her to withdraw again, and it was with the negativity that she recalled from childhood that she considered ending her training on several occasions. Nevertheless with the encouragement of her family and her mentor, Montserrat eventually decided to continue to move forward, curious to see how realistic the entire concept of training was in the first place.

Slowly, Montserrat grew confident with social interaction, even if it meant at an arm’s length. The more interested she became in relationships with others, whether it be of a friendly or romantic type, the more appealing the ability to touch became and the harder she trained. It was not until the spring of 1996 that Montserrat would be brave enough to put her hard earned labors to the test by initiating her first kiss in the library. It was through this simple gesture that the young witch finally saw the possibility of what could be achieved through dedication, positivity, and most importantly, hard work.

     Stage of Discovery: 1996-Present
While the fear of touch has never quite disappeared, Montserrat has matured significantly through the challenges presented by her training. Her sixth and seventh year at Beauxbatons showed a more outgoing version of herself, Montserrat became active in school activities, participated in face to face interactions more freely, and even managed to have a few romantic relationships with minimal physical contact. Though she is able to block out some of the sensation, it would be untrue to say that touching someone else feels the same way it would for any normal person. She likens the sensation to a strong vibration underneath the skin, a humming that becomes increasingly uncomfortable, only worsening when Montserrat is unable to focus. However, it is difficult to truly describe what touch feels like for the young consensimens, considering that every person evokes a different reaction, some significantly more painful and a select few, rather pleasurable.

It is near graduation that Montserrat commits to becoming a Healer and begins schooling at Dilys. This is a turning point for the woman as it is when he decides to continue her training. Encouuraged by her successes, regardless of how small, she considers the impact her ability could have on the medical community. She believes that she has finally found her calling, finally made a connection between the ability she was born with and her purpose in the world and it is with this belief that Montserrat entered the next stage of her training: the ability to isolate and understand the sensation in those who are experiencing pain. This is a stage that will take many more years to master but is one that she has been devoting the last four years to. Due to her studies as well as a relocation to London, Montserrat has not had the opportunity to devote as much time to her training as she had liked but makes good use of the opportunities provided at St. Mungos.

Professor of Medical Studies [WIP/Olivia];; Montserrat has developed a very close relationship with her former professor as she played the role of her primary consensimency mentor while she was a student at Beauxbatons Academy. The relationship between these two will continue to develop, as she one of the very few people aware of her ability, Montserrat relies on her for continued support as well as advice on general manners. She played a major role in Montserrat’s developed as a teenager, and will continue to be an important source of knowledge and understanding. Threads between them will not only include present events but also reflect on the past, which will provide better insight into Montserrat’s journey thus far and development as a character.
Basil Stringfellow;; By the time Montserrat encounters Basil, she would have been attempting to use her ability to isolate illness through touch for practice. It is during a chance meeting at St. Mungo’s that Montserrat is attempting to identify the origin of the man’s pain that she suddenly feels nothing at all, the witch is confused by the sudden loss in feeling and for a moment fears that she’s lost her ability. It is this bewildering encounter that makes her wonder about the limitations of her ability, as she does not know that he has used occlumency to ward off any entry into his personal life.
Ben Fletcher;;  During a rotation at the Emergency Healing ward which she is assigned after a particularly busy night, a child comes in with severe symptoms for an illness whose origin cannot be identified. While Montserrat shies away from touching the child in front of her superiors, she later visits his room and attempts to isolate the origin of the illness. With deep concentration she is able to find her answer and seeks Healer Fletcher to give him the information she’s gathered. Through the conversation that ensues, Montserrat reveals her ability to him. From that point on, he, too, becomes a mentor for her and someone she can look to for advice.
Prosper Lachapelle;;  Prosper is the first person Montserrat willingly tells about her ability, after which the two are in a short-lived relationship where she allows more physical touch than she ever has with anyone else in the past. Some of their previous relationship will be explored through character reflection and dialogue, allowing for a glimpse of how Montserrat has progress from then until the present and how her interpersonal relationships affect her capacity to overcome challenges related to her ability. Montserrat will also seek him out for emotional support as she feels that their past has helped them create a stronger bond over the last year.
Sabela Portela;;  Towards the beginning of the current year, Montserrat is introduced to a young Beauxbatons student who is also a consensimens. Feeling an affinity with her, as the witch expects the younger girl will eventually experience many of the same challenges she did, they begin to write letters where she gives her advice and answers any questions that Sabela may have. While Montserrat does not have the skill or talent to become a mentor for her, she hopes to give her advice and provide a sort of comradarie during this exciting but very demanding time.
Volker Blauvelt;; Volker and Montserrat first encounter each other in her fourth year when they are grouped together in Potions class. It is when they brush hands by accident that Montserrat experiences a very a strange sensation: unlike the sudden sharp pain she would almost always encounter, she noticed that he was significantly cold, it was almost as if her whole body had been dipped in an ice cold bath, sending a shiver down her spine. Had she encountered a real life vampire? Surely it was not possible. It was soon after that experience, when the two had become closer, that he confessed his secret: he was an elemental. In the future, Lena and I intend to explore how the nature of his ability interact with hers and intend to plot further once the rewrite of the Elemental guide has been completed.
Darla Boyd;; Even though the two young women meet briefly in school, it is not until her rotation in the Pediatrics and Maternity ward at St. Mungo's last year that the two become closer. Darla serves as a mentor for Montserrat, especially as she is currently completing her residency in that ward. Darla helps Montserrat adjust to life at St. Mungo's as well as become more comfortable with the workings of the ward. In the future, Darla will also serve as a support system for Montserrat, as she discovers the limitations of her ability as well as comes to term with the fact that not all patients can have the happy endings she wishes for them.
General Plots Considering that Montserrat intends to work at St. Mungo’s upon graduation, I believe there will be more opportunities for plots involving her ability, one that I am particularly curious about is to see how she progresses as she continues her journey. According to the special features guide, with many years of training, Montserrat will not only be able to simply isolate the source of pain but eventually learn to heal it. As an aspiring healer, this knowledge is particularly rewarding for the woman, who is determined to use her skill for the sake of others. Another aspect which I look forward to playing is how this ability affects her romantic life. While she is open to meeting new people and enjoys socializing with others, past trauma related to the pain she experienced with physical closeness in the past has made her very careful about relationships. I believe that the challenges experienced by a consensimens will help Montserrat learn to be more in tune with herself as well as her place in the world, particularly when it comes to her personal desires.

June 2001 | St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries
Montserrat took a step to the side and out of the way as a group of Mediwizards whizzed past her, an elderly man was transported on a stretcher, his face red and sweaty, tell-tale signs of a fever, and his body shivering quite noticeably. Surely it’s ague she thought to herself, watching the team work closely as they waited for a Healer to make their way over. The floor was packed to capacity with patients, it seemed as if that was the day everyone in London had decided to become ill and make their way to St. Mungo’s in one way or another. The very sight of the amount of people in the room was enough to make the Healer-in-training want to find a corner where she would go unnoticed but she knew it would not be long before she would be called over to provide her own diagnosis.

It was her third day in the Emergency Healing ward; she had just finished a rotation through the Magical Bugs and Plant Poisonings with Healer Jaracas only last week and had somehow lost her confidence. The woman had a reputation for being critical, this much Montserrat had learned when she had started her education at Dilys but working under her was also a formidable task, it seemed as if she could never get anything right as the Healer often looked for reasons to correct her work.  That floor would not be her first choice next year. It was not long before the Healer-in-training was called over along with other fellow students to exam a young child, who had arrived with a high fever, unexplained lumps around his throat, and unconscious. She shied away from questioning, listening closely as her colleagues asked about the child’s whereabouts and a history of health. None of it made sense: he was perfectly healthy, he had not shown any other symptoms, and had fallen unconscious almost immediately after returning from the basement.

When the mother became preoccupied with one of the other Healers and her colleagues went about discussing possible causes that Montserrat dared to reach out for the little boy’s hand. If only she could sense what was wrong with him then the fever could at least be reduced, he was not responding to any of the treatments so far and she was worried that this could prove fatal. She gingerly reached out for his little hand, enclosing it in her own. It was then that a she experienced a sharp pain, so surprising that she flinched as if she had been scalded. She looked down, frowning softly as her heart raced in her chest—of course he was sick but there was no indication that he had been in such agonizing pain. Now she had no choice. Taking a deep breath and looking around as if to ward off suspicion, she reached out for his hand again, clenching her jaw slightly as she concentrated on eliminating the sensation coursing through her body in an effort to isolate its origin.

She could feel the heat rise in her own face, the throbbing pain slowly easing as she gradually blocked off the sensation. And it was then that she realized that the ringing in her ears would not go away. Could that be the source? “Has he been experiencing any ringing in the ears?” she asked suddenly, receiving a puzzled look from her classmates, the woman shook her head, unsure of how the child’s ears had anything to do with the diagnosis. She leaned over to check his ears carefully anyway, if not ringing, could there have been pain? The mother had mentioned something about nauseous, could the child be experiencing vertigo as a result of some type of infection?

It was then that she noticed it, inconspicuous evidence of a bite mark, the origin of which she was completely unaware. “There seems to be a bite here, Healer Fletcher,” she states plainly, as if it were obvious all along, she moved a little out of the way as if to offer him a view. “It’s a bit difficult to see, towards the back there with the little ring around it. The mother mentioned the kid was looking for something down in the basement, maybe that’s where he picked it up? Should we have Healer Jaracas come down and take a look?” she wondered out loud. She looked up at him as if to receive confirmation of her diagnosis.

Re: Special Feature Applications

Name: Ashton
Character Name: Jocasta Silverman
Feature you are applying for: Legilimency

Description of the character: First and foremost, Jocasta is a passionate woman. Passion drives the most important ideals in her life. She's invested in each and every cause that she agrees to involve herself in, and when she commits, one can be assured that she's committing for the long-haul. Jocasta is normally very set in her ways and her morals -- she is a person who is very sure of herself and her motivations. That being said, she is ethical and lets the boundaries of her moral compass guide her in what she feels is the right direction. The morality of certain things or courses of action are immensely important to her.

Jo is a natural-born leader. Being the oldest child, she had plenty of experience before school with her younger siblings in learning leadership skills. This also led to a very maternal attitude, and she often feels the need to protect those who are younger, weaker, or less fortunate. While still very enthusiastic about her own causes and goals, Jocasta tends to be very altruistic and will almost always put another before herself. She believes it's necessary to think of others first in order to be a good, effective leader, so often times, her own needs are last on the to-do list. In dire situations, she's immediately willing to risk her life for innocent people. However, before she does this, Jocasta likes to exhaust every possible option and then to pick the best one -- in all cases, it's the one that benefits the most people (or keeps them safe). Thus, she's brave and will take many leaps for others and for a cause she believes is important. She's an understanding person and can empathize -- to a degree, of course. She's much more willing to try to understand someone's point of view if it's not rooted in malicious intent. Understanding people is a particular specialty of hers, considering that her job involves a daily process of attempting to conceptualize what goes on in criminals' minds.

It must be emphasized that her bravery shouldn't be confused with recklessness. Jo is rational and logical; she is perfectly capable of examining things with a clear head. Especially in a daily workplace setting, the witch is careful not to let her emotions and personal feelings about a subject cause her to jump the gun, make any careless mistakes, or to rule the way she acts in general. She's also quite analytical and is prone to analyzing things from potentially different circumstances, viewpoints, and stages to reach conclusions. These things have led to a mature disposition -- she strives to make herself easy to talk to and to get along with. In her opinion, it's exceptionally difficult to accomplish anything monumental when constant immaturity and purposeful naivety are present.

In school, Jo was one of the top students in her class in terms of academia and popularity. This being said, she's a very smart woman, capable of thinking in abstract thought processes, decoding the motivations of enemies, and understanding complex subjects from all areas of the spectrum -- morally, academically, etc., respectively. Jocasta is hardworking and efficient, almost always managing to set her eye on the prize and to simply go for it. That's the tried-and-true method she's used in achieving all the previous goals she's reached in her life, and it consistently seems to do the job. She's meticulous and persistent with how she goes about this; she's reluctant to take breaks or let anything slip by. Though she has room to be a braggart after her achievements and considering her skillset, Jo is actually quite humble and prefers to put those skills and talents to use as opposed to showboating them for attention.

Jo is all for theorizing, but after the theorizing, she prefers to go carry out her word. She's not one to sit back on her laurels and is a go-do kind of person -- progress won't happen without some degree of action involved. She wants to be the person making a difference and doesn't like to let other people do all the work for her. Jocasta tries not to beat around the bush about her motivations or ideas and is, a great deal of the time, a straightforward person to work with and to be in any kind of personal relationship with. She possesses a certain degree of wit and is a quick thinker, but this almost never interferes with the delicate balance of professionalism she's managed to craft.

As a general rule, unless outwardly insulted, Jocasta is a friendly, warm person. She tries her hardest to be approachable as most of her job entails serving the public and as a result, she's become very personable over the years. Jo knows the dynamic of the human brain rather well and she is usually able to navigate social situations, even sticky ones, with great grace. In uncomfortable happenstances or when she's simply in the presence of people she might blatantly disagree with, Jo is usually diplomatic and good at appeasing both sides to prevent fights from happening. Lastly, she's become very wise in her years as an Auror and as a member of the Order of the Phoenix -- she can pick up on subtle cues and warnings that others might not be able to, and she's also had quite a bit of tumultuous life experience to give her that kind of wisdom at twenty-five.  description will go here.

Application: Jo is very responsible, hardworking, and a quick learner. All of these things in conjunction with her nearly-expert knowledge of Occlumency make her a good candidate for having learned its sister branch of magic, Legilimency. As proven by already learning Occlumency and mastering it in a rather short amount of time, Jocasta possesses the mental stability and capacity it requires to be a very good Legilimens. She's meticulous in her learning style and will have poured every ounce of energy she has available to learn and hone the obscure branch of magic, especially since it will prove useful or resourceful to those her allegiances lie with.

One of those allegiances is, of course, her workplace -- The Ministry of Magic. The Department of Magical Law Enforcement, to be specific, and the Auror Department, to be even moreso. Jo loves her job. It is one of the aspects of her life she places a great deal of importance and value on. She feels an incredible need to protect her department, its secrets and classified information, and those who serve in it. With an impending promotion to head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, she will feel even more intensely about that subject. She's passionate about the work she does and respects all of the people who place similar values on their work. The promotion will increase her sense of responsibility for the goings-on in the department and having Legilimency at her disposal will make her feel more capable of acting as that shield, as well as to help her become more secure in her own abilities to be a leader in such a significant way. Additionally, she'd be able to use Legilimency on particularly difficult cases. It would be used sparingly, but this might be something she chooses to resort to in special cases -- on or off the record.

Secondly, even moreso than to the Ministry, Jo is loyal to the Order of the Phoenix. As it currently stands, I'm not aware of any played members of the Order who are proficient in Legilimency. There are a couple who are proficient in Occlumency, but not in its counterpart. Moreover, in character, she will feel very much as though it will serve as an asset to their organization, especially with the hike of new Death Eater activity and attacks since the Sleepers' awakening. It's not difficult for me to see her having volunteered herself to learn it as she's already an expert in Occlumency, which, I infer, will have made the Legilimency learning process quite a bit smoother. While the Order tries to maintain a good balance of effective action and strong morals, Jocasta is a fairly seasoned member of the Order and could be trusted in interrogations that might require the morally-questionable help of Legilimency. Dispute within the organization about the morality of such forms of magic is also a plot point I'll be exploring, even with her husband, Kendrick. Regardless, the vital information she could inevitably extract from some Death Eaters would be helpful to the Order and to moving along those plots. Her skills and her position at the Ministry will make her a valuable resource that the Order has at its disposal, which is important because, conversely, the Death Eaters will also have many resources and more numbers at theirs.

Thirdly, she's loyal to her family and friends. This overlaps with the last two sections a little bit, but this is mostly where she'll draw the conclusion that bending her usual morals is acceptable from. Protection is very instinctual and natural to Jocasta; she feels that every measure she can take to secure things she is responsible for and cares about should be carried out -- thus, her family and friends, being the most important things in the world to her, will play a part in her decision to learn Legilimency.

I think, initially, Jocasta will have been very averse and reluctant to the idea that learning it might be beneficial. However, after that inner battle, she'll have come to understand that her discomfort with the idea of breaking into someone else's mind is alleviated by the lingering principle of the 'greater good' she tries to live by. This will be the only way she's able to keep it together without crumbling -- justification of this kind of magic because of its arguable benefits. She wants only the best for all of wizardkind and is willing to sacrifice her own peace of mind to prevent problems on a larger scale.

Future plots: I have a number of future plots set up that are versatile in style, involve several characters (some of which are only mentioned in the "larger" plots) and can be long term or short-term. I've discussed things with quite a few separate drivers, and while not all of these plots are heavily dependent on Legilimency, it can be easily included in all of them. I have also left out some smaller budding plots that have potential in response to Jocasta using Legilimency on Auror cases or working with other witches and wizards who have these abilities.

   chantal garnier:

The first plot I have is with Lena's French Auror and Diplomat, @Chantal Garnier. Chantal, fleeing France for personal reasons, and already being skilled as a foreign worker and an Auror, will come to work for Jo in her department. Taking a liking to Chantal and seeing some similarity between Chantal and her younger self, the two will develop a camaraderie and get to know one another. Eventually, Chantal and Jo will come to trust one another and to see one another as driven, powerful allies. Jocasta learned how to perform Occlumency from a member of the first Order of the Phoenix, but has not since taught anyone how to do Occlumency -- or Legilimency. Legilimency is borderline dark magic in Jocasta's opinion and so she is very reluctant to reveal to anyone that she knows how to perform it, and so Chantal will be one of the first people she entrusts with the information. Chantal will find out that Jo is proficient (whether it's in a letter to her husband she stumbles upon on her desk, hears her speaking to Kendrick one day, etc.) and promptly confront her, asking Jocasta to teach her these forms of magic in the name of self-preservation, protecting others, and protecting confidentiality.

Furthermore, this will give Jocasta an opportunity to trust someone of a similar mindset, and Jocasta, upon increased Death Eater attacks, will utilize her relationship with Chantal to induct her into the Order of the Phoenix. Chantal's new skills (though not quite as honed) will be useful as Jocasta's are, as will her skills as an Auror.

Jocasta's relationship with @James Laurent, Chantal's superior/boss at the French Ministry as Lead Auror and Jocasta's friend, will ultimately either be strengthened or tested by her interactions with Chantal.

   basil stringfellow:

@Basil Stringfellow is a proficient Occlumens, but he is only a learning Legilimens and his ability is not as strong as Jocasta's in either area. He is close with the young girl Kendrick and Jocasta will be moving into their home this summer, @Billie Fay, and this has presented multiple plot opportunities. Basil is a Death Eater, and when Jocasta attempts to break into his mind using her Legilimency, he will be able to relay this unsettling information to his superiors and the rest of his comrades who are also Death Eaters.

This will put a strain on Jo's relationship with Billie and, in her desire to monitor the letters Billie is sending to and receiving from Basil as well as supervise her visits with him, cause her to act out.

Basil's knowledge of Jocasta's Legilimency ability and his spreading of this knowledge is going to make for some interesting plot opportunities both in her personal life and between the Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix.

   gaius purcell:

@Gaius Purcell is an imprisoned Death Eater with a lot of power and influence. According to plans that Gavin and I have later on in playtime, Gaius (either through Billie or through word of mouth by Basil) will learn of Jocasta's abilities and seek to do something further about this. He will feel threatened by how dangerous she has become and will use the people he has rallied as brand new Death Eaters or old loyalists to curb the new Department Head's plans to divert his.

We have discussed more but we are preferring to keep it secret as some of it is a surprise!

Billie's relationship with Gaius will also be a talking point. Billie knows much more about Jocasta and Kendrick than any other child or person who is closely connected to Death Eaters, and Gaius is intending to use her to get closer to the Silvermans. Jocasta's Legilimency ability (or her Occlumency, which the Death Eaters do not necessarily know about) will come into play several times while trying to protect her job, the Order, her family, and Billie.

RP Response: "Legilimens."

The encantation was quiet, but it was serious and sure. Jocasta operated best under such circumstances. If she let herself get too emotional, let her control slip too far away from her, that was when the magic got sloppy. Wasn't that always the case, though, and not just with these more obscure branches? Jocasta could count on one hand the amount of times emotion in terms of magical proficiency had served her better than rationalization.

She was not to be confused for a cold, unfeeling person: She felt things. All the time. Jo considered herself a passionate witch, and her husband, the subject of the most emotion she ever showed anybody, was more than enthusiastic to back that statement up. Performing Legilimency was a special job, though, and it required a meticulous, analytic mind to sift through the information to really glean anything from the literal invasion of someone else's mind. This was exactly why not many witches and wizards found themselves right for twisting and bending to fit into such a specific space.

Jocasta wondered about Chantal, though. She was certainly capable in terms of intelligence and ability, and she hadn't doubted as much of her apprentice in their first few sessions. They were starting out easier, less morally corrupt, and she was teaching Chantal to learn the defensive counterpart, Occlumency. She'd started there herself, and she wasn't sure where along the line she had decided that Legilimency couldn't be that much worse, but it had happened. Somewhere. Jocasta justified many of her actions by thinking of the greater good and how many lives would be saved rather than violated by her actions. She thought the saved far, far outweighed the violated. Or dead, in extreme cases.

Chantal was a good person, and she would have been naive to assume it would be easy for her, especially in light of that fact. Her face was more than telling.

"That was okay," Jo straightened up and raised a light brown eyebrow, her topaz eyes appraising Chantal. She felt a tingly surge of approval trickle down into her fingertips. "But you can do better. This time, think of your mind having a shield. A stone shield. Keep me out, whatever you do. Remember that everything could be on the line if you encounter a Legilimens as proficient as me, Chantal. If you did today, and they were a Death Eater, many of my secrets would be there for the taking."

Jocasta's hands, deceptively manicured, adjusted her dress robes as she leaned down to her protege for another test. "Legilimens," She commanded more firmly than the last time, and felt the light of Chantal's mind swath the sides of her head in white.

Name: Lowri
Character name: Eris Rosier
Feature you are applying for: Occlumens and Legilimens

c h a r a c t e r

Eris is the only surviving child of Erebus Rosier and Lucretia Layton. Her elder brother, Evan Rosier, died in the first wizarding war at the age of twenty; becoming a martyr for the cause in their father’s eyes. Eris spent the next decade trying to fill the hole that Evan left, and make her family proud. Naturally gifted with the Legilimens ability, the moment her father became aware of her talents at the tender age of fifteen, Eris began being tutored in both Occlumency and Legilimency.

As an individual, Eris carries a lot of anger, fear, and paranoia.  She attempts to give off a demeanour of being icy and controlled, but she is at her core a mix of volatile emotions. She never forgets a slight, whether real or imagined, and has a fiery temper when it is unleashed. Eris considers herself brave, but she is simply bold. She is self-serving and will save her own skin in any situation, hypocritically however if she sees others being cautious she takes this for cowardice. She is strict on others, if not herself.

Eris is hard-hearted, with little love or compassion for others -- and she has no concern for appearing sensitive. She would much rather be feared than loved, believing the latter to be a lie. The only people she cares about are her family and a few very, very close friends. Rarely is Eris without a strong emotion bubbling away just under the surface. Despite this, she is proficient at appearing regal and being soft-spoken most of the time -- it is only when her temper flares that she struggles to keep her elegant composure. Eris lacks patience and tends to avoid situations she would rather not deal with. Her judgements are rarely sound or objective, rather they put her feelings first and logic second. She is known to make rash decisions when in a temper, and if in enough of a rage will certainly not think through the consequences of her actions.

She sows discord and chaos, taking deep pleasure in watching others around her succumb to plans she has put in place -- whether they be simple tricks or life-altering situations. Eris is a jealous and vengeful woman, and is happy to take a small disadvantage now in order to make her recompense that much more harmful. She is particularly sour about the head start men are given in the world, and the many opportunities she perceives them having over and above the fairer sex. She is competitive and relentless. If there is something she desires, she will strive to obtain it at all costs. Eris is headstrong and ruthless, and incredibly resourceful when focused -- she desires above all else to prove herself.

Eris has had a strong sense of pride instilled in her from a very young age, and as such thinks very highly of herself. She is snobbish and places a lot of importance on blood purity. Eris is confident in her abilities to the point of arrogance -- she is indeed an intelligent and cunning woman, but her downfall is that she thinks herself much smarter than she really is. In addition to confidence in her wit and magical prowess, she is very vain. When she wants to be she can be charismatic and will try seduce in order to manipulate if required. She has a coercive nature and will attempt to corrupt any who she believes are impressionable.

a p p l i c a t i o n

I envision Eris as a naturally gifted Legilimens. Somewhat like Queenie Goldstein, she is able to probe unnoticed and with seemingly little effort. She does not require a wand and can perform the skill nonverbally. When attempting to infiltrate the mind of someone with basic Occlumency training, she can be detected if not careful, and those with intermediate training will undoubtedly realise she is at work. However, she is very talented, and can only be successfully deterred by someone who is as gifted in Occlumency as she is in Legilimency. A note, however, that Eris is not brazen about her ability. It is known only to Death Eaters, and even then on a need-to-know basis. Therefore, she does not attempt to probe beyond her ability, or in a way that would expose her, unless she is planning on wiping the memory of the victim. Eris is not above using coercion and torture to assist her.

As an Occlumens, Eris was not innately skilled. She has learned the art from the age of fifteen. With just over two decades of experience she is now proficient and can keep her mind guarded both wandlessly and without needing to utter a spell, unless the Legilimens should prove to be especially strong. The Legilimens, if not particularly talented, will not even be aware that Eris is capable of hiding anything, and she is able to distract with false memories. If detected as an Occlumens, Eris can be aggressive in her defence. Eris is almost constantly practicing her Occlumency in her day-to-day life, and is therefore rather adept in this branch of magic.

Surface-level probing, looking into the memories of those with no training, has little effect on Eris. Likewise, when keeping others out of her mind she can generally do so without much detriment. When she is made to work hard, however, the toll is physical as well as mental. It has been a long time since she has suffered migraines, nosebleeds, and the like, but it is possible. Her skills are at their strongest when she has direct eye contact, but it isn’t necessary on those with little or no training.

With regards to her ‘discovery’, Eris would have always been able to read people well, interpreting the feelings emanating from others as just something normal - something anyone could do if they paid attention. The moment where Eris was identified as a naturally gifted Legilimens is detailed in her history, at one of many ‘working’ dinners organised by her father:

Quote
Eris, curious as she was about everything going on, often tried to listen in to the plans being made by the men who visited. She was not allowed, of course, and her father soon became aware of her skulking around in the hall outside the drawing room. At dinner one evening, Eris was sat beside a young Russian gentleman, not very smart, whom she was not the least bit interested in but seemed the most likely to tell her what she wanted to know. Ilya revealed more than he should have, in hushed tones, but not enough for her to be satiated. Eris was upset that he refused to give her more detail. Before the men and women separated for the evening, she was glaring at him across the room, lamenting her loss, when suddenly she had flashes of a dream that was not hers. A blinding green light, women and children screaming. Eris dropped her glass of wine and fell to the floor in a heap, gasping for breath - it had seemed so real. All who were present assumed at first it had been a vision, that she had been gifted as a Seer, before she went on to describe the events in more detail, and Ilya came forward;. Eris had broken into his memories. Immediately, all agreed that this gift could not be wasted. It would be useful in the years to come, with what plans they had already laid out. Erebus arranged for Eris to be tutored in the skill of Occlumency and to hone her natural talent in Legilimency. She began these lessons at home, but upon returning to Hogwarts would meet Lysander Knox on her Hogsmeade weekends for further tuition.

Following her identification and subsequent training, Eris petitioned her father to be allowed a career. Initially reluctant, he eventually relented, with the condition that should the time ever come, she would filter information to him and to the cause, and that she would place herself where she would be most useful. Eris didn’t hesitate - it was everything she wanted: to be accepted and treated like an equal.

Upon leaving Hogwarts Eris entered Auror Training - where better to be placed to help them than to be right amongst those trying to quash the movement? Her colleagues were sceptical, as expected, of someone who had a known Death Eater for a brother. She fed them what they wanted to hear: that Evan had been stupid and young, and made the wrong choices. He had died for a stupid ideal, and she resented him, and her family, for it and all the harm it had caused.

Throughout her Ministry career, Eris was able to avoid direct suspicion by routinely assisting in the capture of wanted dark witches and wizards, specifically those she deemed deserved it: lowlifes and petty criminals, and those unworthy of being true Death Eaters or to even be mentioned in the same sentence. Eris believed that although the Dark Lord was gone, someone would replace him one day, and she wanted to be ready.

Eris went so far as to marry a man from a well-respected family, Ruairidh Boyd. She allowed him to court her purely out of curiosity, but later found out he was a member of the Order of the Phoenix. Seeing her chance, she worked to make him fall in love with her, and he was so blinded by this that she could easily extract secrets from him - sometimes without even needing to use her Legilimency. Eris later murdered him, when the second war began, and the true nature of his death remains unknown.

During the second war, Eris was officially blessed with the Dark Mark, though kept it concealed with clothing and glamours in public. She hid her allegiance to the Dark Lord, and continued to work in the Ministry. Under Gaius Purcell she was promoted to Lead Auror, and then Head of the Investigation Department. She used her skills as a Legilimens and Occlumens to gather intel for the Death Eaters, whilst simultaneously remaining as inconspicuous as possible.

     gaius purcell and melissa knox:
Eris is one of three senior Death Eaters still loyal to the cause. Gaius is, and always has been, her mentor, and she his protégé. When Gaius eventually returned to Lord Voldemort’s side in 1995 she was used to torture him for information. Since this, their relationship has only grown stronger. She is his confidant and loyal lieutenant; when he was arrested she remained in place at the Ministry. Once imprisoned in Azkaban, Eris arranged to visit Gaius routinely, “for interrogation”, and always came back with useful new information (that she usually had accumulated from other sources, but attributed to him in the hopes he would be seen as cooperative). On these visits he instructed her with regards to the sleeper cell of new Death Eater recruits.

Eris’ childhood friend Melissa has recently returned from her self-exile in Sweden, and between her, Gaius, and Eris, they are planning the next moves for the Death Eaters, biding their time until they can strike, and this time make no mistakes. Eris and Melissa both hold senior positions in their respective organisations, and can use this to their advantage.

@Gavin, @Elena and I have some more plots in the works, but wish to keep them under wraps for now. (:

     basil stringfellow:
Eris was enlisted to train Basil, one of the new recruits, in Occlumency and Legilimency. She was a reluctant teacher at first, but understands it is for the greater good. Basil had approached Eris directly, once they had been revealed to one another as part of the sleeper cell, but she turned him down. Later, with encouragement from her seniors, Eris agreed to impart her knowledge to the young wizard. In their first few sessions Eris was intentionally harsh and unforgiving, extracting various memories from the boy that he had not wished to share, but he was unperturbed. The Auror finally relented upon recognising his persistence, and she has made a diligent student of him. Basil has been able to catch the odd glimpse of Eris’ life from their lessons, but so far nothing monumental… yet. In future threads, Basil’s skill will improve and Eris will succumb to some more vulnerable circumstances, and Basil will learn more about her past.

     lorin odell:
Lorin works at the Ministry, and Eris sees a great deal of herself in the young witch - some of which Lorin will impart willingly, and the rest Eris will discover through using her Legilimency. Lorin is a font of knowledge for Eris, thanks to her position in the Ministry and also as a member of a family of Order members. Eris will use the information she extracts to grow close to Lorin, and attempt to sway her to the dark.

jocasta silverman, kendrick silverman, and Billie Fay
Jocasta is a fellow Occlumens and Legilimens, though Eris is only aware of Jo’s ability as an Occlumens. Eris is still undetected, but Jo is suspicious of her; Eris tried to read Jo’s mind during a department meeting during the war, though was unable to slip in without alerting Jo to her presence - at the time, Eris was unaware that Jo was an Occlumens. Thankfully, because there were others present, Jo was not able to ascertain who the culprit was, but knows it is someone in the Department. Jocasta’s husband Kendrick will also have learned basic Occlumency as a result, for fear that whomever was trying to gleam information from Jo would try to do so from Ken.

More recently, the couple are acting as foster parents for their ward, Billie Fay. Billie, or Sybill Sinnoway as Eris knows her, is of interest to Gaius Purcell, and by extension the Death Eater community. Eris does not care for the child, but follows Gaius’ instruction. Jo and Kendrick could have been Eris’ way of observing the girl from afar, but she has been thwarted.

As of the end of July playtime, Jocasta will be the new Head of Magical Law Enforcement. Eris will privately feel threatened, and publicly this will come across as jealousy. Eris is older, has been in the department longer, and will perpetuate the rumour that she wanted the job, though she is in fact (mostly) content with remaining as Head of the Investigation Department. As playtime progresses, the animosity between Jo and Eris, and potentially Ken, will develop.

     winston t. foss
Eris mistakenly believes Winston Foss to be an expert Occlumens. She has, unknowingly to her, successfully peered into his mind and memories. but finds nothing useful. He is unaware that she has done this, and she is likewise unaware that he simply does not know anything of interest. She believes that what she is seeing in his head is in fact all an elaborate facade. Unwilling to push harder for fear of being caught, Eris periodically attempts to look in now and then, but finds the same “implanted” memories.

Obviously, in addition to the above, I am open to other related plots (both past and present) in which Eris can play a role, for Order members and Death Eaters alike. Eris does not only use her skill for business, and is more than happy to delve into people’s thoughts for her own entertainment.

s a m p l e

“Try harder."

She could feel him poking around, just touching at the edges of her thoughts -- but that wasn't enough. Not if he wanted to break into the minds of those who weren't defenceless. Eris sighed deeply in exasperation. "I'm barely making an effort to stop you," she teased, perusing through the books on the shelves as if to make it clear that her concentration was elsewhere. Eris could think of a hundred things she would rather be doing right now than playing teacher. But it was necessary. Gaius had made it clear that she could not let the cause die. They needed to be ready to strike when the moment came, and in the meantime they needed remain in the shadows. It wasn’t that she cared about the fate of the boy, or of any of the others, but she had a personal investment now, too. Basil knew who she was -- who she really was -- and she needed him to be able to hide that should anyone ever take an interest in him.

Eris’ cold eyes lifted away from the bookshelves to gaze into the fireplace, the reflection of the flames dancing in her irises. He was sat, hands gripping at the arms of the plush chair, sweat forming on his brow, staring furiously at her. Trying to get in. She wasn't going to let him -- or at least, not anywhere she didn't want him to see. He wasn't terrible at keeping her out -- when he could focus. When he was distracted, however, Eris could make her move. And he was quite easy to distract, for her, anyway.

The auror turned to face him; half of her illuminated by the warm glow in the grate, the other half shrouded in darkness. Their eyes met and a smirk spread across her lips slowly, deliberately. With eye contact he was better, but she could break him. There was no sound in here but the crackle in the grate, the swish of heavy fabric when she moved, and the occasional strained noise escaping from his lips. She was dressed more casually than she did at the Ministry, though whose definition of ‘casual’ she was using it was unclear; her deep red velvet robes fell to the floor in a bloody waterfall, slits from the shoulders revealing her pale arms as she folded her hands in front of her, the golden glint of her heirloom rings catching the light from the fire.

Eris fixed him with her gaze, her expression unshifting as she sat delicately on the arm of the leather sofa behind her. "Have you thought about me?" she asked, her tone smoother than she'd ever spoken to him before as she crossed her legs, the deep slash in the fabric spilling open to reveal the skin beneath. A flicker of hesitation on his end, she could feel it. He made her skin crawl but she was revelling in it. “I know you have.” The Auror replied, the barest hint of a smirk playing across her lips as she reclined backwards slightly. She placed one hand on her thigh and lowered her voice, “I know what you want, you can't hide from me.”

C H A R A C T E R

The biggest thing that others could underestimate about Regan is his seemingly docile but harsh personality. His family and close friends would see a kinder, and more heart-driven, man as he is family-oriented above all. He is a natural provider, wanting to give all he can to his loved ones. His sense of duty to those he deeply cares about keeps them all on the right side of his fine-tuned list. These are the people he would defend, go to battle, and potentially die for. His wife sees him as a strong sweetheart, his children see him as a loving father, and his most of his friends find him to be good company. He can even be an inspiring individual to some with his ambitious determination. He radiates with self-confidence as he goes about his day, week, month, and year. Even when he may find himself in doubt, he'll falsify a sort of wit to make up for it.

He takes a great deal of personal responsibility for how he is perceived. He is charismatic, and portrays what some could consider the traits of a natural born leader. Regan has no problem with being polite and proper showing an aged sort of etiquette that he was raised by and graced by influence. He is extraverted, finding solace when being surrounded by people, especially people he adores. There is a great deal to gain from being around people.

While the man can act, he prefers to be authentic by choice. His emotions and feelings are quite real, sometimes volatile, and sometimes soft embracing arms. While in the realm of the dark shadows of the wizarding world, it could be seen as weak to show signs of being human, he finds it an unpredictable strength. Despite that though, he is a private individual, never divulging in matters that he deems too personal. He can talk endlessly about his own travels, but will not share about the family vacation, or how his children are doing outside of his inner close circle of those he trusts. He quite understands the need for boundaries, and likewise is a trustworthy member of society. He (mostly) maintains secrets, understands value of unspoken words, and won't break a promise or go back on his word. The only way he would falter, is to maintain his and his family's reputation. It is true that he can be a bit of a self-preservationist, covering his own tail before helping others. He does it to be able to continue to provide for his loved ones. If he failed, he would fail them, and he would be devastated if that were to occur.

Regan is intelligent, and it often times shows through is actions, more than his words. He carefully crafts plans and thinks in a strategic fashion that could be metaphorically described as 3D wizard's chess. He's honed in on this type of thinking over the many years of his life, and it's quite natural to him to think before he does something, figuring out the best route to the best outcome.  He is a man who can be rather focused on the task at hand, sometimes to the point of obsession if it is important to him. He won't give up on a task, even if it seems impossible, until he reaches it. It may take him years to reach the goal or finish the task, but he'll always strive to see it through. There is no denying that he is patient. He'll wait for however long it will take. Regan is a rational wizard, who prefers logical discussions over emotional outbursts. He is intuitive and perceptive of people, watching behaviors, listening to voices, and reading body language. He especially knows his close friends and family well enough to know when they are upset or happy. Knowing people, and how they work and tick, helps him greatly navigate the many aspects of life around him.

That is because Regan requires control in his life, and can't handle taking orders from others. He is his own leader and follower. There is a sense of dominance that is at play whenever his power is questioned or taken for granted. He bows to no one, besides his wife. Regan is quite a stubborn and relentless man, as once he makes up his mind, it's rather hard to change it.  Once he's set on doing something, he will do it. He can be unforgiving of others who negatively cross his path (while rare) and can hold a lifelong grudge. He is judgemental of those who are different from him and intolerant of change that impacts his world view. He is a purist, and believes purebloods are indeed superior, however he will deal with halfbloods and an occasional muggleborn. He does believe muggles deserve death, considering they prosecuted his family in the past, and continue to cause the wizarding world great difficulty. Regan Reddington, when crossed, can turn into a cold and ruthless man who will take matters into his own hands. It isn't beneath him to kill someone, and hide every evidence of the circumstance, if it meant protecting those close to him or himself. However, Regan is a slow simmer, with a low temperament, and not easily angered.

The wizard has a creative imagination that he often enjoys exploring. Regan enjoys learning, and can spend hours or days with a nose in a book if it meant that he would learn something new that would help him get to wherever he wanted to be. He can be described as a forever student, always wanting to learn new magic, new skills, and learn about new people. He enjoys gathering information, and figuring out the best way to use it. He enjoys a challenge. in a way that he loves the feeling of satisfaction upon completing something difficult. While he is someone who often times fails, he doesn't let it get to him, and will continue to try. He likes the way it feels to work his mind, or use skills he had learned. Regan is growth-oriented and sees potential in everything. Ultimately, he loves deep meaningful discussions about a wide range of topics.

It can often times be hard for strangers or acquaintances to see the soft inner core of Mr. Reddington. At the end of the work day, when he comes home, he is deeply affectionate towards his wife and children, and adores his family and friends. There is nothing more important to Regan than those he loves.

A P P L I C A T I O N

   The Why

Applications freak me out. Ask anyone. I wouldn't be applying if I didn't think it was something I could play, or that my character was incompatible with. I'm continuing to work on Regan's sheet, and I know some of you are all excited about it, which makes me excited too. This is my first dark wizard, ever, and I can't wait to unleash him into the MH world (*cackle*). That being said, applying Regan for an SF isn't directly related to his affiliation, and is more in line with his profession. Which I think is a lovely twist, and I feel that makes it fit a lot better.

A lawyer (or advocate in wizarding world terms) is required to maintain client confidentiality throughout the case and trial. While it may seem easy in the muggle universe, it could potentially be more challenging in the wizarding world due to the variety of spells that could be cast to reveal client testimony, private discussions, and the train of thought or road map of the advocate. By knowing occlumency, the advocate can help better protect themselves as well as the accused from those who wish to see to thwart the trial or bend it to their will. Regan is one to have difficult and challenging cases come to him, such as Death Eater's, Snatcher's, Murder's, and so on. This has been the case since roughly around the end of the first wizarding war when he advocated for followers of the Dark Lord for the first time. He also has fairly normal clients, and often times comes to the aid of the victim and innocent.

It would be very important for Regan to know Occlumency in order to do his job, shady or not. It would be known to his clients that he is skilled in Occlumency, providing a layer of privacy that other advocates couldn't directly offer. Just like his father was a known Occlumens within the trade of law. Private contracts that people wish to maintain private, secrets to hide that vary from affairs to murder and everything in between from clients, as well as his own dealings and troubles in his past and semi-following of Voldemort during both his (brief) reigns. High profile clients would want to maintain a level of privacy that Regan would give them, which gives him a nice bonus to charge a little more than the average lawyer.

His training and knowledge of Legilimency would be kept a secret, even to his close friends, beyond the most important ones of knowing his desire to learn it. Considering prying into people's mind isn't entirely legal, and he'd like to maintain a level of trust with the public, he wouldn't ever share about his training, or attempt the spells on a more capable witch or wizard beyond his level.

   The History

Regan Reddington began studying Occlumency underneath his father at the age of 21 upon graduating from international law school. In order to maintain the family business, be head of it, and continue it, a lot of information is to remain confidential. Because their line of work varies on the scale of light and dark, on the books and off the record, they wouldn't want curious minds to unravel their precious influence. His father trained underneath his father, and tends to be passed down through the family as new generations take over, to give them the best chance to survive. From the first day of taking over the family business, to present day, Regan has been practicing and using Occlumency, making him have over 31 years of experience.

In the court room (and outside of it during trials), the skill allows Regan to defend clients of the most wicked crimes. His mind, and therefore client's testimony, would remain protected. His analysis of the trial before him and moves he'd make to provide the best opportunity for his client, would be protected. As he is a large believer of maintaining privacy, he takes a great deal of precautions to protect that privacy, therefore takes the practice of Occlumency quite seriously for his profession. He wouldn't want someone to know every move his personal advocate made within the trial if he were to ever be charged with a crime. He isn't one to bluntly go around and sharing that he is skilled in Occlumency, however he does let his clients know in an effort to gain their trust and keep them at ease during their discussions with him and their trial. If they knew they were safe, he wouldn't have to pry information out of them.

Occlumency has also helped him as an aid to blood purists like Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Beyond helping them navigate wizarding law, Regan has kept a wide variety of secrets for Death Eaters, and maintained a distance from falling into the trap of being within the cult. He found himself to be someone others would go to, to share secrets or concerns, knowing a select few Death Eaters weren't entirely faithful to the cause or Voldemort. He had aided muggleborns during the Second Wizarding War, often times coming under scrutiny by Death Eaters, such as his friend Gaius, and he maintained confidentiality unless he had someone in particular to offer up as a sacrifice to maintain his reputation amongst dark witches and wizards like him.

Maintaining the many different off the record debts witches and wizards owe him and his family requires secrets. Because Regan deals with a variety of ways of payment, he has witches and wizards under his thumb that he would protect their identity from those who wish to know what they've been up to. Despite them owing a debt to him, he would like to collect at the appropriate time and for their debt to remain under his control.

It wasn't until his mid-forties that he began practicing Legilimency and in secret, and is quite weak in that area. Still at a rather beginner level, Regan only uses the spell as a form of practice to gain more experience, less to gather any information. At the moment, practicing Legilimency is recreational. After all, why would he need to extract information from someone's mind if they wanted an advocate to represent them in the court of wizarding law. He hasn't had much of a need, but it would allow for additional plots for Regan to continue his practice. If he gets to a point where it isn't a daunting spell for him, he could train others to learn, at the very least, Occlumency.

   The Ability

Over the 31 years so far of training in and using Occlumency, Regan has honed in the ability to close his mind off to intrusions. If he is unable to ward off an invader, he has learned how to manipulate the memories and thoughts the individual is searching for. He feels an odd sense of an electric vibration that can vary in length and intensity, much like being electrocuted by low voltage, and likened to 'brain zaps' of misfiring neurotransmitters when he is under attack. It's actually really bothersome to him, and can cause him some headaches when he is trying to ward of intrusions. In the past he has had to deal with migraines, nose bleeds, sinus infections and loss of balance. These days he is able to take care of himself, and knows when he is at his limit, to get away in some capacity before it gets to those points. He is able to protect his mind wandlessly, after several years of practice, and it's become a bit of a habit for Regan to have his 'shield' always turned to 'on' when around others.

Those who are new to Legilimency he would feel the strongest, as it's quite like taking a sledge hammer to a brick wall. Individuals who are skilled in the craft of Legilimency would be less able to be detected or felt, more like a robber who had several years experience. Not a complete master of Occlumency himself, Regan finds it difficult to detect the masters and highest skill levels of Legilimency. Those who have just as many years of use, if not more, are capable of breaking his barriers. That being said, Regan is always using Occlumency in his day to day life, and grows in ability slowly every year that passes. He is teaching himself ways to set traps within his mind when evidently up against someone who could potentially be more skilled than him. He is teaching himself to better protect his and his client's secrets through use of redirection, which is to drag the invader to a pointless memory, or an endless loop. At this present time he is using memories of classical music and mundane things to redirect focus.

The Occlumens would have to have a steady mind and steady emotions, which Regan sometimes doesn't have. His greatest weakness is to put his family at risk, as he finds it the most difficult to keep himself level and clear when he has a deep capacity to care for his family's wellbeing. He does his best to take every percaution, but even then he trips up every once in a while and can be vulnerable.

The SF doesn't make or break Regan, but adds another layer to him that gives him a more rounded character development, past, present, and future. I hope that it makes sense that he'd be a well capable Occlumens, and a mediocre Legilimens. If approved, I look forward to playing him with these abilities, using them in any plots deemed appropriate, and normal threads where seen fit.

P L O T S

Overall, I'm hoping over time to be able to play out him practicing using Legilimency on someone, training new individual(s) in the art of Occlumency, and a few court room shenanigans. There is a future pathway for this SF, with many different opportunities available. He would continue to be involved in blood purity related actions, and his skill may be handy for any sort of dark plot that may eventually unfold. His connections to others could potentially unfold additional plots that I haven't discussed at length with. I'm always hesitant to plot with people directly for concrete plots, as 99% of the time, they fall through. Beyond direct characters, the Sleeper plot could provide opportunities for Regan to use his Occlumency and prod around brains of others through practicing Legilimency. He could assist in training a few of the new recruits with Occlumency if needed. I'm vaguely aware that the dark wizarding realm will be making an appearance again, and I would like for Regan to be involved in some capacity.

But, at more finer details, I talked with @Laura about @Eris Rosier teaching Regan the more finer points of Legilimency. She would have owed him a favor, likely due to giving her information about his visits with @Gaius Purcell, and he would of trusted her with this task after knowing her since her appearance among the ranks of the Death Eaters during the Second Wizarding War. Because Regan knows her, and knows his good friend Gaius has faith in her in some capacity, he'd be more likely to learn the skill from her due to the common core cause of bettering wizarding society. With him learning from Eris, he would also have to keep his mind protected from her in an effort to keep his family and family secrets safe. He doesn't trust her intentions of prying. With @Elena 's @Sylvester Walker, Regan would be trusted with the many contracts his cousin deals with for his businesses, that are to be protected and confidential. Sylvester can feel safe that the many ways his businesses are ran are hidden from prying eyes. There's several future options available for the two as they venture the world together. Elena also has a Death Eater in the background somewhere that she is working on bringing back named Melissa Knox, who Regan would have met around the Second Wizarding War. She trusted him to give her safe passage to Sweden, and it is likely some of her "co-workers" came looking for her before the Battle of Hogwarts. She returned to England to take over the Daily Prophet, and likewise from there I would like to plot with some others for Regan to test his Legilimency training on (from Eris) to give intel to Melissa for the Prophet as an anonymous source. The two would enjoy a few articles of chaos in hopes of changing the direction of society.

Regan's first official/successful Legilimency would likely be on @Nathalie Wilkins, a young woman who has taken his daughter under her wing, in an effort to know her intentions. Considering he is quite protective of his family and loved ones, he'd take every precaution to know more about the girl who is seeing Reena regularly. He'd want to know she wasn't a threat, and will likely learn about her up to an amount approved by Gavin. There is also @Gaius Purcell, whom would be aware of Regan's ability in Occlumancy, considering that the two have known each other since Hogwarts years, and there's many past and future opportunities there as well. Gaius can send messages to the outside world with the assistance of Regan, who views the prisoner as a best friend still, even after the horrendous crimes throughout the years.

His skillful Occlumancy would assist him with dealing with Ministry workers who question his morals such as @Jon Emerson Sr, @JT 's character, who I haven't spoken directly about the SF with but have discussed their frenemy type relationship that blossomed during Regan's internship years at the International Confederation of Wizards. At some point, it is likely that Jon Sr will corner Regan about past things that don't directly add up and would have to wiggle his way free from that grasp. Considering he'd be a pain in the a** to several characters beyond mentioned, I would assume he'd be on some sort of list via the Ministry to keep an eye on. It is possible he could run into other Occlumens and Legilimens that are of lighter affiliation as a result and endure a power struggle of the mind. I don't have anyone in particular in mind for something like that, but it's something that could happen.

S A M P L E

Regan rubbed the temples of his head as he focused on the paperwork before him. He had been sitting beside his client in the court room for the past four hours, whom had a conspiracy to overthrow the Ministry charge on him. Something serious that would wind him in Azkaban for life. What bothered the man the most was that Mr. Charles Tucker's statements to him were of innocence and what was being claimed before them were false. There was no reason for Tucker to lie to Regan, otherwise the entire trial was pointless. Otherwise, Charles was wasting his debt, and Regan's natural code of silence.

He eyed the judge, banging the gavel for order, as chatter and shocking awes rolled through the court room of new evidence. There was an odd familiar sense an internal electric charge of the mind that shivered down his spine. He'd have a headache by the end of the trial if he couldn't find the source. Sure, Regan had informed Tucker of his skill in Occlumency, but the court room before him could only believe it to be rumor, more than reality. Regan liked it that way, it made things easier if it wasn't fully out in the open. Someone was setting the man up beside him, and using Legiligemcy on him. While he wanted to know why, Regan had to remain relatively focused. The familiar tingle of attempts to penetrate his barrier was unnerving. The man stared at the rip in the parchment for a few moments, estimating the length of the tear.

He looked up from his notes the moment he heard his name come from the judge's mouth. "Your honor," Regan stood up from the table, eyeing the room before him.

"As you must realize, new evidence brought forth in the middle of a trail is a bit curious. Does this letter prove that Tucker walked into the Ministry of Magic, and opened fire on the workers with curses and hexes, killing two, as you so claim? Let's break it down shall we," Regan paused, rocking his head from one shoulder to the other, his eyes resting on the eyes of a Wizengamot juror. A hint of guilt crossed his face for a brief moment. Got you. Regan continued on, scanning the remaining jurors seated before him, "This letter was dated when? Thursday before the Monday of the alleged attack? How is the handwriting, the quillwork? Does it actually match my client's handwriting?" He turned to Charles, pushing a piece of parchment towards him, "write my next words, and keep up," with that Regan felt the spine tingling sensation that made him aware that someone was not content with the direction he was heading.

It was almost disorienting, as he paused briefly, resting his hand against the table, his gaze returning to the guilty looking juror before back to Charles. Regan closed his eyes briefly, playing a moment of classical music he remembered witnessing a few years ago within his mind as a method to clear it. "Write," he whispered as he pointed to the quill. "If Mr. Tucker would have written something hastefully to his wife as a form of a confession for his crime, his quillwork would include distinct marks that would match those on this new piece of evidence." The former Slytherin watched the man scribble as quickly as he could to keep up, Regan walked toward the commanding Judge of the trial, "may I see this new letter? Considering I haven't had a chance to discuss this evidence with my client, nor seen it myself, I would assume that we would have fifteen minutes with this evidence to discuss it with my client. After all, he will merely deny it is his out of surprise would he not? Wouldn't you?"

Regan was granted fifteen minutes, and a break was called. He walked back to the table, kneeling next to it, eyeing Charles' handwriting with the letter briefly, "keep writing, like your life depends on it - because it does." He watched Tucker gulp, before eyeing the juror whom he had suspicion of as he left through the door, "I will be right back," he slammed his hand onto the table, "write, Charles," eyes watched him as he walked to the door and exited the court room. Regan quickened his pace, catching up to the man, and pulled his shoulder back in the middle of the quiet corridor. "What are you playing?" He growled.

"I know it's you," Regan grabbed and tugged against the Juror's tie, bringing the man closer to him as he backed him toward the wall, "you have guts to try and get an upper edge against Mr. Tucker, who for all extensive purposes is being set up inside the trial," the man growled in a low tone, his eyes narrowing, "who set you up to gather intel?" He refused to let go of the blonde haired man's tie as he pushed back, "why is it important for Tucker to be framed as guilty?" The man stuttered briefly, turning red, "oh, you think I wouldn't find out that you're a Legilimens? MERLIN," he groaned dramatically, "you're the worst kind available. It's like you're sending the blasting charm at me, I'm sure anyone would know it was you, klutzing around like you have no idea what you're doing." Regan let go of his tie, and pulled out his wand poking at his neck, "Legilimency is illegal, especially within a trial, do you not know court room etiquette?" Of course not. He hadn't seen this juror before in his entire life of being in the court room. He wasn't old enough to be a Wizengamot member. It didn't add up or make sense to the fifty-two year old wizard, which was exactly why he was in the corridor with him.

"Tell your boss that if he has a problem with my client, to speak to me directly," he hissed with disdain, "unless he is a coward, which it appears he is to claim a low level ministry worker who enjoys his job is a killer." Regan's wand dug into the juror's neck for a moment, "I don't want to see you in that court room again. Tucker will go free. I bet... your life on it." With that the dark wizard turned and headed back into the court room, ready to analyze the quillwork with the commanding judge. The sensation he was experiencing dulled to a low headache that he was sure he'd need a potion for once the trial was finished. He turned to Charles, picking up both pieces of paper, looking for the drippings of the ink, the R, S, T, and H's.

They didn't match.
